April Ratings

My point exactly! Let's see they could have filled in the weak spots in KB's coverage with....107.7....no? Just throwing it out there!
107.7 , if not gold based country, should be simulcasting WGR. Ton of money to be made doing that. I cannot get GR have the time at my house in Lancaster

Our steaming listeners in Buffalo is huge. Our SEASAC royalty fees top over $2,500 per month. 4 years ago, that number was about $ 200 per month.

Do you mean SoundExchange? They charge for digital royalties. SESAC is the smallest of the publishing royalties. There's also BMI and ASCAP.

What you don't know is how much the FM helped preserve the audience of the AM. In several cases, declining AM talk formats have reversed the trend by adding FM; they did not improve, but they stabilized.
In the case of WBEN, it was dismal failure. The simulcast on 107.7 FM did not grow the audience while at the same time they lost The Lake revenue. Entercom wouldn't have given up the simulcast if it was working. The pipe dream of finding new listeners for WBENs vitriol died a grim death...

If true, why has Entercom Audacy burned through 3 formats since The Lake? The WBEN simulcast failed. WGR would fare no better on 107.7 Where does that extra revenue come from? Putting WGR on FM would only make sense if they planned to jettison the AM signal...

Yes, my bad. I meant Sound Exchange for streaming/app BMI/ASCAP/SEASAC Royalties over air
Sound Exchange collects performance fees for recordings for label and artist royalties. It does not collect for compositions.

For streaming, you need both BMI/ASCAP/SESAC/GMR and Sound Exchange.

Don't forget Irving Azoff's GMR, the newest kid on the block.

Simulcasts are not designed to "grow the audience." The latest example is KNX in LA.
Right! They are principally used to avoid the total death of the AM band due to the aging of the existing audience and the lack of any new ones in the sales demos.

I respectfully disagree.

The station SHOULD be Gold Based Country….George Strait, Alan Jackson, Randy Travis, Clint Black, Steve Wariner, etc.

Since they were dumb enough not to do that, the frequency would simple give more coverage in the 17 counties the station reaches. In those counties, they are all sports crazy Buffalo fans.

Honestly, it may not matter as digital is going to replace towers anyway, but from a geography standpoint, I do not see how it can hurt. It gives you 2 major markets to sell Buffalo sports, instead of one.

Like always, it may not have the ratings, but I like revenue more, and it could certainly benefit in that way

I was at Entercom at this time, selling and some on air.

WBEN FM 1077 was an experiment they thought would work because of conservative talk and a conservative geography.

It worked and it didn’t. It’s always better to have more formats to sell. Essentially it was a translator for 930am.

There was zero buzz, and really no addition revenue. I personally would of hired a salesperson exclusively for the outlying areas

The brass then figured it out, which brought on the Lake. In my opinion, that was far better than anything since.

I wish I could grab that station. They won’t sell 😕

I would love to buy a full power Buffalo FM, but it appears that ain’t happening soon. Corporate continues to drive this industry into the ground.

I do not want any other small AM stations in Buffalo. If I buy, it will be a big station in Buffalo, but I’m not counting on that happening

As I recall, The Lake was on the air for 7 or 8 years. Entercom dropped it for the WBEN FM simulcast. After they saw the futility, they chose to try Alternative. They would have been better off bringing The Lake back(or something similar AAA). The 107.7 signal is suited for a niche format that will create some listener passion. As you pointed out, Corporate does not care about that...

Yep. Dumbest thing they ever did. I was in the room when they announced it and almost threw up.

An alternative station on a rural signal. Yea, that makes sense!

So many people want to hear the flogging doggies, or whatever their called, in Pike, NY

That is the moment I knew that I had to get out of their. The ONLY thing it was a little good at is making money off concerts, and even then, it would have surprised me if anyone in the crowd gave a *** about the station

When I kept hounding that it should be country, management told me these exact words…..”why would we want to be the #2 country station for ratings?”

Are you serious? There would be a few reasons why……YRK is the top revenue producer in the market, and nearly number # 1 in the ratings for almost 30 years! You seriously would not want to be #2, and etch a little away from WYRK?

I was doing overnights at YRK for 10 years from 86-96, I was doing afternoon drive and sales at WNUC from 96-99. I can tell you exactly why Entercom should have went country LONG AGO.

It’s too late now. Nobody cares!
