So much tropo yesterday (6/26) that even I had to sample the acttion. A couple of highligts from my current beach location on the Gulf at the Florida-Alabama Stateline,(around 10am)....

92.3 WLWI Birmingham, AL with country music and local ads.
162425 (Weather Band)...WNG633 Sneads, FL (Tallahassee)
Both of these from a distance of about 160 miles. Radio waa the C. Crane Skywave barefoot.

Also heard....UNID station on 92.5 with religious talk mixing with translator for semi-local WHEP, Foley, AL
107.9 WPFM, Panama City, FL. Contemporary Christian Music. Approx. 130 miles. Fairly common here curimg tropo events.
I also heard what I believe was WKBU from New Orleans on 96.7 with classic rock. Didn't get a positive ID, but this one is also a fairly regular visitor during tropo events. Distance is about 140 miles.

This would be tropo from three different directions. East, West, and North.

91.5 KUNC Greeley, CO - NPR
92.5 KKSE Broomfield, CO - Altitude Sports 92.5
later at 5 pm:
88.1 WHRL Emporia, VA - simulcast of WHRV
88.1 WHOV Hampton, VA - Hampton University, Jazz/Urban Contemporary
89.5 WTJY Asheboro, NC - Joy FM
89.5 WHRV Norfolk, VA - Public Radio for Eastern Virginia
 
Had a nice Es opening to MN, SD, ND, and one in NE (KEZO-92.3 Omaha). Several new. Will post a detailed report later tonight in a separate thread. Gosh, it's nice to have a Supertuner in the car and narrow filters, otherwise 1/2 of these Es logs would be covered by massive splatter.
 
Repeat of an impressive catch, or stumble on what's actually a regular?

I spent Saturday night, July 2nd, at a hotel in Covington. Louisina. Suburban New Orleans, across Lake Ponchartrain across from the city (about 25 miles.) To my surprise, XENK from Mexico City was in with Mexican Pop music and a positive ID. Comfortably on top with a fair signal. I had also heard XENK at the same location a few years back.

620 around New Orleans at night used to be pretty much owned by WJDX from Jackson, MS. But no trace of them Saturday night. Of course, things change, so perhaps XENK is now the new normal. Whatever, I was surprised to hear it.

Conditions to Mexico were quite good. XEX. XEW and XEOY were all in. XEB was probably the best signal, and XEQ was also present with local WYLD nulled on 940.

For the Chicago area DXers who might be interested... A weak WGN was the best Chicago signal. WBBM was even weaker. The other Chicago blowtorches were missing. Surprisingly or not, Who was the best midwest signal.

I used to go to the New Orleans area frequently years ago and the Chicago blowtorches were all strong especially WLS, but that was in their musicradio days. Things change.

Certainly agree.

However, I think that I ran into in New Orleans (Covington) was an extension to what I was dealing with all week at on the beach. Conditions there just won't very good. Even WSM, WSB, and WHAS were all only fair at the beach, Usually, they're monsters. WLW was close to missing entirely (although WCKY was strong). Cuba and Mexico were better. Meamwjile local WCOA (5kw on 1370 Pensacola), which usually gets buried at night, was pretty much in the clear.

What you're describing almost sounds like auroral conditions.
 
Here in Houston, I regularly (particularly in the last year) have conditions similar to "auroral", where most of the big signals to my north are weak/nonexistent and Mexico and Cuba dominate. I have been told that auroral conditions are not possible this far south, but the phenomena exists. I always assumed the auroral conditions depend on where the signals are bouncing off the ionosphere, not where the receiver is. Maybe someone better-versed on the physics of it could help?
 
Here in suburban Chicago, I did my usual "canary in the coal mine" test(s) this morning. WCCO, CFRY, CJOB all weak or very weak. WLW, WSB, and WHAS all strong. The conditions may or may not be auroral, but they certainly mimic auroral.events, Crazy stuff!
 
There was a super-duper Es opening just a bit ago from FL to AR/TX/MO. It hit 2 meters and a friend in Springfield MO heard NOAA Eskip from the Tampa area on 162.450 (the Largo FL transmitter).
Now a 108+ opening from the northeast to ND/SD/MN. Go get 'em DXers!

I've heard them a few times in the Chicago area, but usually right before sunrise. Never as early as you did.
 
Check your radio (and point east) Zantenna! Ontario DXers logging your area right now, including KUWR-91.9 Laramie to Toronto!

Last night I had about 10 min. of relogs from New Mexico around 7:10-7:20PM. KRST-92.3 w/ ID and Nights with Elaina, and KXNM-88.7 Encino w/ RDS. Also had a 90.7 with the Sunday night public affairs show that K-LOVE does (// 103.1), probably KQLV Santa Fe.

A half-hour of Es this morning to NV, AZ, and UT. Two new stations for the Yakima logbook and one is new overall (never heard before at any location).

10:00AM - out to the car after Randy in Goldfield NV logs Wenatchee FMs at 700 miles
10:04AM - 93.1 KYMT Las Vegas, NV (23.5KW, 779mi) with The Woody Show and RDS
10:05AM - 92.3 KOMP Las Vegas, NV (25KW, 779mi) with '...OMP Las Vegas...' partial TOH ID
10:10AM - Tentative 88.7 KNAU Flagstaff, AZ (100KW, 931mi) in for 15 minutes with classical music, DJ stopset didn't have any local mentions and NO RDS
10:19AM - 92.3 KTAR Phoenix, AZ (98KW, 1019mi) with local news and ID 'Arizona's News Station, KTAR News'
10:22AM - 90.5 KUAT Tucson, AZ (NEW #716 to Yakima logbook, 12KW, 1109mi) with 'Classical 90.5' ID. Previously heard in Ellensburg last month!
10:25AM - 93.9 KMGN Flagstaff, AZ (96KW, 931mi) commercial for Finley Toyota of Flagstaff, mixing with an NPR (likely KUQU Enoch, UT, a relog)
10:29AM - 92.1 KXBN Cedar City, UT (NEW #717, 95KW, 719mi) ID 'Today's Hit Music, B-92.1'. Eluded me for years, finally IDed this station!
Es took a dump after that.
