The changing face of LA Television.

Only two new syndicated shows are debuting in the #2 TV Market for 2022-23, both on Fox 11 and second runs on My13 KCOP: Sherri (as in Shepard, the replacement for Wendy Williams) and The Jennifer Hudson Show. All the other stations are sticking with what they have and/or adding more hours of local news content. 3 stations, KTLA, KCAL and KTTV will go head-to-head from 4am-11am. With the return of "Off The Clock" at 2pm, and a new expanded "Special Edtion" of KTLA news from 3-5pm starting 9/12, Channel 5 becomes the go to channel of So Cal residents to get their continuous weekday news Fix from 4am-7:30pm.

Unless another OTA station steps up to the plate, it's going to be much harder for syndicators to get clearance in LA with local news as King.

Syndicated shows are having an uncertain future given that we mentioned about viewers going directly on the apps on their TV's to watch a show that's a factor here. We mentioned on the thread about NBC talks about cutting the 10pm hour and most of the responses are related to NBC pushing viewers to go to the Peacock app in that case.

Also worth keeping in mind that the LA TV market is huge, all the way out to the AZ border and including nearly 18 million persons in Inyo, LA, Orange, San Bernardino, Ventura, Riverside (except Palm Springs) and half of Kern counties. It's 48% Hispanic, 15% Asian, 6% African American and just 30% non-Hispanic white.

The composition of the market has a great influence on the programming on the local stations.

That is true too given the situation.

KTTV will not be on from 4-11am. I saw schedules that look like Sherri will be on at 10am after their morning news. The 10am hour is just a two-week gap.

Interesting. I thought it strange they gave up the Noon hour news. In any case, with the exception of 11:30pm to 4am you will be able to find News or local based programming on at least one channel the rest of the day.

But even Palm Springs cable carries all or most LA stations. You can get both local ps and la.

I have both cable companies (one through the HOA, the other is a Spectrum FiOS package). They do not carry any of the network affiliates.

On Frontier, only the LA PBS and KCAL from LA. Spectrum (old Time Warner) has KCAL and mostly blocked out KABC and even worse KNBC from LA. There are local ABC, CBS and NBC (plus Fox, Univision and Telemundo affiliates locally) that are 100% protected on network and on most syndicated shows.

David, I was in Palm Springs visiting my brother in June of this year and they were getting a number of LA stations. Perhaps the number has dwindled, but (leaving out this latest visit), you could get the full boat of L.A. a few years ago. However, I may be remembering KCAL in Palm Springs most recently.

Entravision should invest better in NBC Palm Springs, but I'm curious about Syndex Rules since NBC4 and ABC7 is available on Spectrum PS Lineup, why is Entravision and NPG didnt contact Comcast and Disney in the Syndex Rules to drop both LA stations

All 7 major networks (5 in English and 2 in Spanish) have affiliates in the Palm Springs market, and so any LA station that carries those shows will be blacked out. Similarly, syndicated shows that are bought by local stations cause LA stations carrying those shows to be blacked out during their local broadcast.

Thats the same as KCAL's distribution in Bakersfield and San Luis Obispo

In the case of Palm Springs, the market has a huge number of weekenders and vacationers from the LA / Inland Empire area who want LA market news. So the cable operators pick up at least a couple of LA channels but black out all the network shows (if any) and duplicated syndicated shows.

So what we get is some LA newscasts, and a lot of infomercials that fill the blacked out spaces.

You mean all 8 major networks, including UniMas?

At least Pluto TV is free tho, I wanna see how their morning show will break the duopoly of KTLA and KTTV. Pluto now sees as a glimpse of CBS News and Stations without geoblocking restrictions.

There are more than 3 shows coming to LA in syndication.
KTLA; Karamo September 19th 4pm
KCAL; The Neighborhood September 12th 11pm-12AM (one hour)
KCAL; American Housewife Septemeber 13th 1am-2am (one hour)
KCOP; iCrime September 17th 3pm-4pm (one hour)
