Warner/Discovery merge with NBC Universal bantered about

Details here. Apparently the cost trimming they've been doing is to make such a merger happen, even though Warner/Discovery is $50 billion in the red. We'll see where this goes.

Interesting story. I thought the reason Discovery bought Warner was to get the studio. That seems to be the prize everyone wants. Perhaps Zaslav realizes that his core business is cable TV. I would have thought he would have sold the Turner group, including CNN. But CNN has a valuable documentary unit that he can use for his other channels. So maybe they sell the studio but keep the library.

But sure, if Universal thinks having a second studio will put it on a par with Disney, that also owns Fox Studios. This would tie in with the other thread about NBC limiting prime time to 10PM. Having that extra program investment money available would be useful. It's always interesting when these big companies start to talk.

This article is linked in the other story:

"Obviously Peacock sucks," an exec with knowledge of both companies said. "There are some good synergies. I'm sure [Roberts] is licking his chops because the [WBD] stock is so low. And I think that's Zaslav's endgame. Get the place sold." A spokesperson for Warner Bros. Discovery responded, "We are building Warner Bros. Discovery for the long term."

Here's a think piece from Forbes about a possible merger. I think it would really test the folks at the DOJ. To get past that hurdle, they would need to spin off some stuff, just as Fox did with Disney. But Zaslov is learning just how deep your pockets have to be in order to own a movie studio. The answer is they have to be really deep:

Grampa, if you think Forbes is a publication with cachet, you're well behind the times. It's been a pay-to-play publisher of random articles from so-called "contributors" for at least 10 years and possibly longer.

In my view, there are too many downsides to this rumored merger. Having to divest profitable divisions to attain approval to take on unprofitable cable assets, would be a fools errand.

On the other hand, there is that $50 billion debt. That's a lot of money.

I remember a few years ago that there were talks that NBC should get Paramount and CBS should get Lionsgate Studios but that became proven false once Paramount Got CBS and for some time was named as ViacomCBS in the Interim until the current Name Paramount Inc was finalized.

There was literally nothing to trust in the Forbes piece. That’s the point. It’s one author’s pontificating over a hypothetical. The other site is just idiotically pretending they have some kind of information…devoid of any factual basis.

I think the DOJ wouldn't approve this deal in my opinion just way too big for either Discovery & NBCU. I'll only believe it when websites say that NBCU is buying Discovery I think it is slim and none I'll eat crow if it becomes offical.

Funny the first place I heard about this on a wrestling dirt sheet video. Aboout if this happens WWE and AEW could end up in the same network conglomerate. I'm surprised nobody mentioned that here.

At some point M&A's reach a diminishing rate of return. If running one studio is difficult to do then more than one would be virtually unaffordable.

Studios have to again start making stuff people want to watch. Bring back the medium-budget fare.

I don't think that would be possible with Comcast in the picture (And they're NOT going to part with NBC that easily)

Viacom and CBS were always sister companies.

I can't see NBCU merging with WBD. Neither company can afford it.

True it's the Redstones that are named as majority investors via their National Amusements name and their history in managing the then Viacom and then CBS inc when they were separate companies before they chose to remerge the companies in response to Disney taking over 20th Century Studios.
