Yet *ANOTHER* terrible move by the Eagle

They’d probably do quite well if they got the Cowboys. Cumulus could need to flip 93.3 to a Ticket simulcast, if that makes sense financially.

I’m just glad iHeart is not flipping KEGL to “97.1 the Brew.” Lol

I suspect few ad purchasing decisions in favor of 96.3 / 99.5 are being made on the basis of Hot 93.3's existence. True, the station exists to "ding" 106.1. But the size of that "ding" keeps shrinking each year, and for advertisers interested in reaching female ears, iHM's trifecta of 102.1, 102.9 and 106.1 delivers a terrific value proposition that is unmatched locally. Also, advertisers who love the country music life group probably aren't terribly concerned about where 96.3 and 99.5 rank versus 106.1. They are probably much more concerned with actual consumer reach.

I think 93.3's current format is highly disposable. Is using 93.3 to rebroadcast 96.7 its highest and best use if 97.1 actually goes (mostly) Sports? I'm skeptical. Could definitely happen, but I'm not sure it'd be such a good idea.

I would stick with the Mavericks. So if the flip to sports/hot/guy talk is true, that could be the reason that the PD left. He must be all music.

The morning shows are certainly a gigantic reason stations such as WMMR, WRIF, WHQG, KXXR, KRXQ, KPNT, WEND and KISW and even smaller market stations such as WGRD and KEZO are so successful.

I think a lot of CHR stations are heavily reliant on personality for success as well.
Personality is why Kiss 108 in Boston ratings are so strong

I’m just stunned 103.7 took out the Eagle
It did it in such a short amount of time too. Ironically it proves that KVIL didn’t take the Eagle out on its own; it shows that there was heavy rot in KEGL for years if all it took was a few common sense moves by KVIL’s new PD to completely turn the tables. KEGL was still blowing KVIL out of the water this time last year and we were wondering if KVIL had signed their death warrant.

I still think part of the problem was being so reliant on Russ Martin. KEGL did not have an adequate plan to replace him, which was inexcusable as his health had been declining for years and they should have drawn up a better plan for replacing him than they did, given the years of prep time for his departure.

Audacy didn’t give up and I’ll give them credit where it’s due. Sometimes it’s just putting the right person in the right place at the right time, and that right person was John Allers. He knew how to beat KEGL and he did it at a speed that I don’t think anyone here anticipated.

Because they’re trying too much to compete with 103.7. Does anyone have a break down of the station is doing with Russ and without? I feel like their move was so reactionary. Just stop playing 21 pilots. Again, I’m just spewing my opinion
KEGL had been playing Twenty One Pilots for years. Since at least 2016. It was nothing new for them and they were beating KVIL for years. What killed KEGL was not 21p, not when their listeners migrated to a station that plays them even more than KEGL does.

Why is that stations like KUPD, WMMR and WRIF do so well. But KEGL does so poorly

I cannot speak for KUPD, but WMMR and WRIF have extremely well established morning shows in their respective markets that routinely earn phenomenal ratings across a wide spectrum of demographic categories.

The show WRIF hired to replace the aging (and high priced) Drew & Mike was already #2 or #3 in Adults 25-54, and that was when Dave & Chuck were still based across the border in Ontario, heard on a station whose signal isn't so hot in some of Detroit's northern suburbs. Since arriving at WRIF, I believe they've been #1 in Adults 18-49, Adults 25-54 and Adults 18-34 darn near every book.

Preston & Steve at WMMR earn just massive ratings, and I suspect they are even #1 in some female demos.

What doomed The Eagle was Russ Martin's death, more than anything. To a lesser degree, I also think some listeners got annoyed at music preemptions for Mavs games, flipped the dial elsewhere, liked what they heard, and devoted more time to those stations than previously.

But mavs games are mostly after 7:00. If anything basketball just gives them more exposure. I just don’t understand why they change a station with an already high cume?

We had that discussion about the rock station in Atlanta carrying Braves baseball, and it wasn't true. The station ratings didn't improve once the Braves deal was over.

Cume is not what advertisers buy. It's purely based on "impressions" which is rating, share and AQH persons (all three of which are the same thing).

Regardless, isn’t that any sort of indicator that enough people were listening to the soon to be previous format? And it’s my understanding 97.1 still bills really well. I think highly risky in an economy that‘s uncertain to spend money on sports talent and to build the format strictly around the Mavericks and nothing else. But I wish them well!

You are absolutely right, and some longtime employees have already walked the plank for taking that side of the argument.

That's what this is about: Money and careers. If you want to be a player, you have to be willing to risk both.

It's not like they didn't have time or resources to fix things. Some have said they hung on too long.

And if this doesn't work, another group of people will be out the door.

The Eagle lost a lot the past few years. They lost Skull, Clo did the unspeakable, they added more talk, they lost The RMS. KVIL dropped the talk and immediately started kicking KEGL's butt in the ratings. The writing was on the wall when they added B&S. If iHeart wanted to save The Eagle they could have but it seems their minds were made up well in advance. They did nothing to keep the heritage rocker because they didn't want to.
