Welcome To The Jungle: Classic Rock's Top Performers, By The Numbers.
It's where adult males are tuned while on the “Crazy Train” to or from work, to get “More Than A Feeling” from their favorite station. It is classic rock, the
Agreed with your comment that 'PLR is more like an indirect competitor. As we know, Hartford & New Haven are 2 separate mkts. So, as you say, if 'PLR did more marketing & promos aimed towards the Hartford metro, it would be an easy dent in 'DRC. But, that still doesn't take away the fact that they are 2 different mkts. 'DRC monikers itself as "CT's Classic Rock" & 'PLR monikers itself as "CT's #1 Rock Station." Some radio-related websites format 'DRC as Classic Rock, & 'PLR as Classic or just Rock. 'DRC leans more Classic & 'PLR doesn't. So, if 'PLR touts itself as Classic, it would not be "CT's #1 Rock Station" as 'DRC is the top-performing Classic rocker by share in PPM - Measured Metrics - Men 25-54, even if a station gets higher ratings in it's own mkt. Confusing situation. Thoughts? In reading the article, it says that 'PLR is a direct competitor of 'DRC..... more like an "indirect" competitor. If 'PLR did more marketing, and promotions aimed towards the Hartford metro, it would be an easy dent in WDRC. IMO.
I lived in Meriden for 40 years, about 20 miles south of Hartford, and all three stations came in loud and clear in the car, but WAQY was problematic inside the brick apartment building in which I lived for my last 11 years there. In the car, WAQY's signal started to get scratchy about 10 miles down I-91, near the Wallingford/North Haven line. I don't know how WAQY did east or west of Hartford, but since Hartford's suburbs are in a pretty tight ring compared to those of major cities like Boston and New York, WAQY was a legitimate listening option in most of them.Agreed WAQY is closer to 'DRC than 'PLR (I used to work @Wacky102, Rock102 & 99Rock (PLR), but, Rich Appel, the writer of the article (who has been in Radio for years) says "PLR is a direct competitor of 'DRC". I'll bet listeners in Hartford listen to Rock102 & vice-versa (listeners in Springfield listening to 'DRC). The moniker for Rock102 is "Springfield's Classic Rock". 'DRC imaged themselves as "Hartford's Classic Rock" before they started "CT's Classic Rock" "What are the two other Classic Rock stations that easily cover Hartford & its close suburbs?" This debate has been going on for years. I guess these stations will continue to focus & concentrate on their markets. - 'AQY/Springfield, 'DRC/Hartford & 'PLR/New Haven. Ugh!
