Super Bowl Halftime & Apple TV

Apple Music will sponsor the Super Bowl halftime show this year (taking over from Pepsi):

There's a rumor that Taylor Swift will be the musical guest, but it hasn't been confirmed.

Variety seems pretty sure it's happening.

Two more good reasons for me to ignore The Stupid Bowl.

Oh yeah, there's also somewhat of a pro football game too. Glad it's on the other side of town.

Easily the most disappointing and overblown sporting event worldwide. And the televised baloney we have to put up with prior to the actual game is the equal of several election ad cycles. The crappy halftime shows are just the beginning.

It's now (September 24th) been claimed that Taylor Swift won't headline the Super Bowl LVII halftime show.

Actually, there's one type of music that's been underrepresented at Super Bowl halftime shows although it's very popular in the United States: Country.

Maybe the NFL should consider a legendary country music act who's popular on a global basis to headline a Super Bowl halftime show.

Besides, I thought the NFL's criteria for selecting a Super Bowl halftime show headliner was to pick someone who has been popular all over the world for a number of years, given that the game and halftime show are seen all over the world. While Miss Swift certainly qualifies, so do a number of country acts.

Doesn't need to be global. American football is a niche sport everywhere but the United States. A "legendary" act isn't needed, either. The NFL is already concerned with its average viewer creeping closer to the dreaded 55th birthday; hauling out Willie Nelson or Dolly Parton for halftime entertainment won't help. Maybe Garth Brooks, George Strait or Brooks & Dunn -- all of whom are in their 60s or nearing 60 but still have younger fans -- would work, or a combination of three or four of today's hottest current stars, which is what the NFL did for the 1994 halftime show (The Judds, Travis Tritt, Clint Black, Tanya Tucker).

Also, in 2019 the NFL entered into an Multi year agreement with Roc Nation and Jay Z to Co-Produce the halftime show for the Super Bowl. It doesn’t matter who sponsors the show. So as long as Roc Nation has control over who Performs I doubt we’ll see country music.

So that's why it's been a disaster for the past few seasons! Guess only coke dealers can afford tickets to the stadium these days. Considering Rihanna's (who?) average audience age I really wonder how many people in the stands are under 40?

With all three AZ college teams losing this weekend as well as our only NFL "professional" team AZ sure is a hotbed of football quality. Enjoy the halftime.....and don't forget to leave a bunch of money in the Phoenix metro. Those severely overpriced hot dogs, beer and overnight hotel rooms (3 nights minimum) sure fill up our tax coffers nicely.

They're programming to TV. These past few years, it's all been about generating social media action.

This year, with Apple Music as sponsor, all the attention will be on computers and phones.

Oh good! Because I don't do social media I can just ignore it then? Well, except for the breathless talking heads on local TV news.

Couldn't tell you anything about Apple Music but the others are overpriced junk.

Free is too high of a price these days? Inflation dontcha know.

I'm surprised it's Apple Music since the NFL uses Microsoft for tablets/replay reviews. I wanted Coke to be the sponsor for the Super Bowl halftime show as the NFL needs Coke more than Coke needs the NFL the NFL should've never gone with Pepsi 20 years ago they should bring back Coke. I enjoy the halftime shows better than older acts I did like Sir Paul, Prince was good, and jumped the shark with The Who in 2010. Was glad they went younger after 2011.

I had completely forgotten that the NFL once had a country music-themed Super Bowl halftime show.

Thanks for the information!

What about Spotify, given that it's more popular than Apple Music?

But country music may be a mixed bag. Sure, someone like Dolly Parton is well-liked. But bringing in people like Morgan Wallen and Jason Aldean would be disastrous, considering that the NFL had (or still has?) a Kaepernick-sized problem.

Wallen and Aldean wouldn't even be considered, nor would Aldean and wife's Twitter target Maren Morris. The apolitical Luke Combs is safe. Genre-busting, biracial Kane Brown is safe. Carrie Underwood is safe. Darius Rucker is safe and has a tie to '90s pop. Country music has enough star power right now to make a halftime show work without getting Wallen or Aldean or Morris (who isn't a star of the magnitude of the other two, anyway) involved.

I would say Carrie Underwood is somewhat in the same territory as Eric Clapton when it comes to COVID-related controversies.

Otherwise, I would agree the likes of Kane Brown and Darius Rucker would be less controversial choices, with the only concern being that they have less of a presence on pop charts. Also, Garth Brooks and Faith Hill may not be bad choices.

But if it is true that Roc Nation is producing the halftime shows, expect for more Hip-Hop/R&B leaning acts to headline, and less rock and country.

Among the Halftime Show headliners of the last ten years, my favorite by far is Coldplay (Super Bowl 50 in 2016).

Weird Al Yankovic for Superb Owl Halftime.

He has been voted for by millions when the NFL posed online surveys in the past that far surpassed the well of musicians the NFL usually culls from. The NFL always has an excuse as to why they wouldn't book him. One year they claimed, the artist needed to have a #1 album that year. Well, when Al's album "Mandatory Fun" went to the top of the album chart in 2014 they invented another excuse to give Al the short hook.

Any way you slice it, Al Yankovic has a very deep catalog of parody that crosses all genres lines of music. He's charismatic, professional and safe for all ages. No doubt in my mind if he was given the nod to do a Halftime Show he would bring both buzz and eyeballs from ages 5 to 105.

I've always enjoyed Weird Al, but he is a product of the Dr. Demento Show, not the mainstream. Music/comedy nerds like me like him, but 90% of the American public would say "Who? What?" if he headlined THE major halftime event in sports. He's just not a major star, current or aging, which is required for the Super Bowl Halftime Show.

Weird Al doing the Super Bowl Halftime would be the equivalent of Svengoolie hosting the Emmy Awards. Not gonna happen.
