Yet *ANOTHER* terrible move by the Eagle

I totally agree that Cumulus shouldn't be using two of their FM signals that overlap greatly (and in the most important parts of the market. 96.7 is overall a better signal than 93.3 in the way it covers the northern suburbs and is stronger overall. Adding 93.3 would give them a little additional stronger coverage to the south and southeast of Dallas, but that's it. Why trash the opportunity to have another station to bring in more $ to hit one corner of the market that isn't even a heavy growth or population area?

Because a new format is set to debut with former personalties on the ticket, which could hurt my brand. Whats worth more? Having a little extra change on the side from a chr that may not bill that well? Or make additional revenue from a format to cover all of the market with another station my area set to debut the same format? Dallas isn’t like other markets. The south in general lives off sports. Why not secure your brand by making a move like this?

uhhhh sir....Southern Dallas County is growing very rapidly
 
The Eagle is definintely a heritage station. It’s been around off and on for 40 years.
A heritage station is one that has a positive image and current use.

Being old and awful does not make “heritage” or the Yugo or the Pinto would be “heritage” Cars.

The Eagle with today’s ratings is not a heritage station. It is one that “used to be great but it sucks now.”

Plus, I'm guessing that it should also be an uninterrupted run?

i beg to differ...the Pinto is a heritage vehicle.
 
The Eagle is definintely a heritage station. It’s been around off and on for 40 years. Ask 10 people in Dallas, “hey do you remember when the Eagle was killed off before for 97.1”, many won’t remember or won’t care because the eagle is here - for now

I still remember it's CHR competition in the late 80's/early 90's calling it "The Weasel." So, yeah, it has heritage. Most likely, however, the response will be something like:

"Did you hear The Eagle went away?"
"Yeah, such a shame."
"Yeah, when did you last listen?"
"I don't know. Maybe 10 or 15 years ago."
 
CBS didn't flip a station they previously owned. They went out of their way to purchase 101.9 with the express purpose of putting WFAN on it.
Either way it was done to secure billing. I can’t speak for other formats. But in the sports world we strike while the iron is hot. I’m currently a tv sports director in my market. If my competior has a lead or a story, you better believe I’m calling my sources to to jump on that said story that night at 11:00. In sports, we don’t wait, or we get left behind
 
The brand doesn't matter more than money. If Cumulus thought they could make more money flipping The Ticket to literally anything else they'd do it tomorrow. They aren't going to kill revenue from 93.3 just to protect "the brand". Especially not when they already have an FM Simulcast that hits their wealthiest target demo perfectly.
 
A breakdown of how many people listen to the Ticket via AM, FM, and streaming would be interesting. The forthcoming 97.1 the Freak could really capitalize on its signal with the right programming. Being close to the 96.7 dial platoon helps, too.

I can get 96.7 fine driving most of the Metroplex except for the far southeast part. It is tough to get it on a home stereo if you can get it at all in Dallas County or east Tarrant County, based on my experience. I can get 1310 just fine in a house. However, 1310 wouldn’t be so good in a bigger steel building. 97.1 and 105.3 have a big upper hand signal wise, but it doesn’t matter as much going down the road as long as you have a good car radio.

The only time I listen to over the air radio now is on the road. Other times, I stream radio stations from various places. I wonder how many Ticket listeners just stream it at home or at the workplace. That would factor into whether a 93.3 simulcast maybe worth it.

The Ticket gets that data, but other Nielsen subscribers have to pay extra for a special report while signing a confidentiality document. And the general public can't see that, ever. But I'll bet that The Eagle's management ordered that report to help make their decision.

The problem with streaming and one that needs major industry attention is that most agency accounts don't allow their buys to be carried on a stream because it dramatically increases SAG-AFTRA fees for the talent.
 
For giggles, let's look at the top 10 markets and see if any of them have a 3rd Sports station, and if they do, how well they're doing.

Granted, yes, this is 12+, but in the top 5 markets, the highest a 2nd sports station got was a 1.8.

None of the top 5 markets has more than one sports station.
