Alt 92.3 to Become WINS Simulcast

Tomorrow at 9 AM NYC radio 📻 is dead...🪦 allowing AM stations to simulcast on Full FM stations because people are too lazy to push a button?! Embarrassing 😳. When FM dies in a decade and people don't have jobs in terrestrial radio anymore because we couldn't get anyone to buy into HD because of greed or into radio for that matter, I will say I told you so. Why is radio dead? Because you killed off AM for FM and allowed news/talk to move to FM and religious broadcasters and brokered programming to come to FM making it a wasteland. It's like the companies are killing themselves.
I agree. At this rate maybe WINS can simulcast on Shortwave as well and would fit in well on what remains on those bands these days.

I wonder are the people wearing the PPM walking and waiting near train stations/major hubs where someone has the station on. It seems really hard to believe their CUME being slightly higher than ALT 92.3. It is not the kind of format someone listens to for a long time other than very brief periods as opposed to a music format.

Actually, there was brokered ethnic programming on two commercial FM stations during the 1980s: WEVD and WNWK. Since then, all of the aforementioned brokered ethnic programming have moved to AM due to WEVD's move to AM in 1989 and the owner of WNWK exchanging the FM station for WPAT plus cash in 1998. In summary, ethnic brokered programming moved in the opposite direction in the NYC/NJ area.

It’s not because listeners are lazy...it’s because AM reception is so bad anymore due to interference, and they need to migrate to where actual listeners are to stay relevant. (Did you gripe when ‘FAN moved to FM a decade ago?)

As for why HD didn’t roll out like DAB did in Europe, it’s because of cost and lack of large scale marketing (yes, there were spots, but only in certain markets that utilized it).

And brokered programming was on FM four plus decades ago.

There will always be a business side to radio. C’est la vie.

Anyone have the recording of the specialty hours on 92.3 this week? Did they have liners for Z100 or RXP and New Rock?

Great news, Alt 92.3 finally sounds like a good alternative rock station. The playlist is opened up, there's lots of variety and some great 'wow' songs. Jocks are live and talking about the music instead of throwing out dumb jokes. Guests are in the studio and there's tons of energy. Keep it up gang, this is good radio! Oops, too late.

I know this is an unpopular opinion on this thread...

But I listen to KNX *frequently* versus when it was 1070, simply because my radio never flips to the AM band. WINS is going to do great at 92.3. (I'm an older Millennial, late 30s).

In all honesty, the choice to lean heavily into the history of K-Rock for the Alt 92.3 farewell is an indicator that WNYL really didn't have a great amount of impact in its short time on NYC radio. That's not meant as a disrespect to the Alt brand or the people working at the station. I truly am a fan of Alternative and Rock music. With that, I feel as if they're having a third farewell for K-Rock more than they are having a farewell for Alt.

So, if it was up to me to pick a final song for Alt, it would The Ramones's "Somebody Put Something in my Drink." No reason. I just really like that song, and it fits the more free-form that they have going on right now.

I did gripe because what happened? An Alternative Rock station was taken off the air. Now it's happening AGAIN!

Krock was on that frequency longer than Alt. More people know 92.3 as KRock not as Now or Amp or Alt.

Anyone remember the rumor of 92.3 K Rock not being available on analog radios because of Howard Stern? I do.

It's more than that. Few AM stations fully cover their market any more due to high noise levels. Even before that, few AMs truly covered the suburbs as they expanded after WW II, and some markets today have now AM that covers them entirely by day and night.

And AM sounds bad. People who grew up on FM won't listen to AM. At all.

Terrestrial radio is fading, but still about 85% of all people use it at least once a week. And no other ad medium has such efficient reach.

Some people like having information, sports and news on FM with a clean signal. And, as rock slowly dies and ages out, talk formats are very viable replacements. In fact, the huge popularity of podcasts is 100% based on talk, not music.
and religious broadcasters and brokered programming to come to FM making it a wasteland. It's like the companies are killing themselves.
Religious music formats are just as important to many as hip hop or reggaetón or CHR or AC. Don't deny others things that they like because you don't like it yourself. And the brokered programming that used to be on FMs is now on the bad-signal AMs.

If I had $1 for every false rumor I have heard, I could by a new Porsche.

Right now, they're giving positive shoutouts to Cane, so I have a theory about Cane and Corey's firing. The story goes that they were fired for breaching contract by doing a podcast. Maybe this flip was already in the works? Because Omar took over the morning show, and then he was replaced by Elliot in the Morning! And Christine left at right about the same time.

When FM dies in a decade and people don't have jobs in terrestrial radio anymore ....

When you have to pay for radio, and when you have to give up your credit card info as well as other personal information in order to listen to radio.....

Those of us in radio know the end is coming. This is why we're moving content to streaming sites and podcasts. We will still have jobs. Don't worry. But you will have to pay a monthly fee.

Christine was amazing. Omar was phenomenal. They should have kept Omar doing music in the morning. I loved it! EITM is horrible!

Theater/Theatre. That was a great retort. Sadly, that is the way it seems to be these days. This will be an interesting place tomorrow. Wonder why no one here has noted there have been more people responding to this thread than 92.3 has had (until this week) listeners.

No matter what, I think its great that so many of you have posted and cared that much. Radio still may have some surprises ahead. Remember shopping malls and Walmart killed downtowns in many towns. Now look at the lay of the land. Maybe Radio has to evolve to nostalgia and take stance that it will ride out to sea with the last sailor, instead of spending effort to attract no one new.

I also remember 92.3 when it was Disco 92, the original WKTU, during the late 1970s and the early 1980s.

Below is a link to an article about the history of the station on 92.3 and its impact on other radio stations in NYC.

Forty-Five Years of Radio History, One Frequency (RadioInsight)

I admit that I totally forgot about the talk format of 2006-2007.

Mets18: Wow! Usually that takes weeks. Like turning off the stereo. You have had a rough week, up your way. First, the Yankees and now this station change. I think we need to get ya down south. #sorryhadtomentionyankees
