WPBP 104.3 LPFM, WRBM 94.7 FM, Other Odds and Ends

Hey all -

It has been awhile since anyone has posted on the forum, so I thought that I should open up a new thread.

For anyone interested, WPBP LPFM in Pearl switched frequencies from 104.5 FM to 104.3 FM back in June. The signal is MUCH clearer now without the co-channel interference from WXRR 104.5 FM in Hattiesburg and KLSM 104.5 FM in Vicksburg stepping all over the channel. I'm a news/talk guy, but I really do like their format. I had not seen any news about WPBP posted here since the move.

My company had a construction permit granted in September in Oxford for WRBM 94.7 FM. I am taking format suggestions from the brain trust here if anyone has a good idea to cover an obvious hole in the market!

I saw that W214BE (Radio By Grace) moved into Jackson from Raymond a few months ago... have not heard their signal yet, but I assume it comes in Jackson much better.

The WSJC 810 AM Magee translator in Jackson is apparently on the air now on 95.9 FM. I think I heard it a few weeks ago but have not tuned in lately.

Finally, there seems to be a pirate on the air on 103.9 FM in Saucier... at least there was a few weeks ago. It was definitely not the LPFM licensed to Gulfport, but something else. They had a pretty slick production, with RDS info and everything... just no FCC license!

Good on WSJC for using their 2mv contour to put a translator way up in Jackson. When the translator thing first started, I suggested that WWL put an FM translator in 80-mile distant Baton Rouge -- if only to cover 870's first skywave null.

Never happened. Oh well.

Thank you for sharing! What is WPBP's format? Also, in what area of Saucier did you pick up the pirate? I live in Lucedale and I wouldn't mind driving down to take a listen. What did you hear?

104.7 in Jackson is a rebroadcast of 103.9 from what I have heard the past couple of days. In fact last night 103.9 was bleeding into 105.9. I Have not heard the WSJC on 95.9 in Jackson area, it was weak signal from B 95 still coming in.

There’s a huge hole in Oxford for an R&B/hip-hop station. WRBO Memphis has a decent signal there. I thought WESE Tupelo was an option, but it doesn’t appear their signal makes it to Oxford.

iHeartMedia will acquire W284DT.

104.7 is louder then wyab 103.9 @ Flowood

W284DT will be acquired by iHeartMedia.

I'm guessing that--once iHeartMedia officially owns it--W284DT will simulcast WJDX (AM620).

Since Saucier was mentioned, I'll mention something a little further south. I caught HD from "Kicker 108" WZKX over here in Baldwin County, Alabama the other day. They're running a modern-leaning classic rocket format called "The Quake" on the HD2 and a hip-op format called "The Hype" that both sounded reasonably well produced. I never did catch any frequencies mentioned so I'm wondering if these are HD-only or if Dowdy's got some translators I don't know about that are relaying these.

I know there's already an urban station in the market, but I don't recall there being a local classic rocker. From my (limited) experience the area, both The Rocket from Mobile and WKBU from New Orleans could be heard, along with 103.7 and 104.5 from Hat-ties-burg but none were really strong.

As for Oxford, which I could contribute an option but it's been over a decade since I last had the pleasure to visit the city. Back then, I do remember it being a bit of a radio dead-land as far as local radio went. Seems like a tough market — small town, with a huge population of people (college students) who probably haven't touched a radio their entire lives.

92.5 WQYZ Ocean Springs is a classic rocker. It's an iHeart station, so it likely sounds like a typical garden variety iHeart station.
