gambler/hd off wrff?

for the last few weeks wrff hd2 has been gone, and so is their main hd signal, but the gambler is still on 102.5, also, wpen hd3 and main signal 104.1 have also been off for 2 weeks....

WDAS-FM-HD has been off as well, so 610 WTEL doesn't have the HD side as well.
The rest of iHeart's HD's are on (although WUSL only has HD1 utilized)

I'm not in the market any more, but here in Los Angeles, their HD signal of KIIS comes and goes. Given that they're only simulcasting the main signal on that HD2 (why?!), I feel it's a similar situation to the Gambler where (unfortunately) if it's not a crucial HD (say, simulcasting an AM talker), then it's of pretty low importance to them to get back on. Granted, where I last lived on the fringe of University City, I always preferred the Gambler's HD2 as opposed to 102.5 or 1480.

WRFF carried Rock Nation on their HD2 for years and it was popular, it even showed up in the ratings from time to time, I guess they thought the Gambler was a better choice or RN was discontinued.

Rock Nation was a fantastic compliment to their regular format, and iHeart has more then enough Premium Choice channels to offer on HD channels, they just have no drive to provide them OTA (I'm sure they'd much rather you stream them on their app). Here in LA, KROQ had a great example of what HD could offer, spanning the Alternative genre- the regular KROQ format on 1, their "ROQ of the 80's" on HD2, and Audacy's modern alternative "New Arrivals Channel" on HD3 (which was recently dropped). Perhaps iHeart felt The Gambler was a better fit on WRFF than WDAS, but it was a bummer that it came at the cost of Rock Nation.

I understand putting BIN 610 on the WDAS-HD2. But yeah, there was no need to bump Rock Nation off of WRFF-HD2.

And of course iHeart wants you to listen through the app. Easier to track who is listening to what, and have all that demographic information at their fingertips.

A good fit, although many would disagree, would be to put the old Standards format that ran on WPEN AM for years on WPEN HD2, use the old liners just massage them to say in HD. There are many old folks driving new cars HD equipped that were big fans of the old WPEN. Its much better then what they are airing now, they could even add a few jocks.

UPDATE: WRFF still RDS no HD, WPEN HD3 and OTA Rimto 104.1 still off.

update: ritmo off wpen hd3 but still on 104.1, gambler dead air on 102.5 but on 104.5 hd2 very weak signal, correct 105. 3 hd2 back on, also wxpn hd2 off the wall christmas music like every year, nice change. thats all folks., still no hd on wpst will they ever bite the bullet.

still no hd on wpst will they ever bite the bullet.
I don't see them ever dropping the money into it unless they can rent out the sides and make some cash back. I'm kind of surprised NJ101.5 is HD with no side channels (last time I checked)
We know Townsquare has no problem leasing out the side channels, look at everything on the WSJO sides.

I always check 101.5, at one time they had an active hd2, it was Indian then they simulcasted the main signal then the hd2 went away. Its nice wprb has an hd2 Indian and hd3 simulcasts oldies wold, although I heard the OTA signal switched to soft hits strange. Rimshots 93.7, 99.9 and 104.9 have very active sides, wobm's oldies is on the hd4. WHYY turned their hd2 off years ago now the main hd is gone. Talk years ago was for WPST to switch on hd with the hd2 being hard alternative but that fell through. The 2 strong annoying lators 96.1 and 99.9 are still running, lator 95.3 has not been on for months although the 740 AM signal is active.

I would agree... if the opportunity on a return crossed the path for WPST to go HD or make the plunge to pickup the expense they would have to shell out for the tech/rights associated with it, then they would have long ago. You hit the nail on the head, if the 1015 sub-channels are vacant then there is really no reason for WPST to do it, granted their coverage areas are quite different but their 54 dbu contours do cover the main areas where the bulk of the translators reside. I do remember the asian programming on 1015-HD2 some years back which wasn't around all that long from what I can recall. I do know that the asian programming on WPRB's HD2 has been there for a very long time in some form. As for the HD3 on WPRB, that is still Oldies/Classic Hits when I punched it up and so are the translators that it feeds. I think their LPFM (Wold) is what is airing a different format entirely in the Edison-Woodbridge area.

We do. We're not seeing flips to oldies.

Minor players in smaller markets.

It is not a trend, it is a last recourse for low power FM stations, AM operations and the like. It is just not commercially viable in larger markets except as a very low budget subsistence format.

I thought the TOH had to be run.

Is this the same person that owns The Word FM network?
If so I'm surprised that they're just running automated '80s music

WVLT in Vineland NJ was able to rid itself of interference not from a translator but from what I believe was a LPFM on 92.1 in Horsham. Even though Horsham is far away from their protected area, they had enough listeners in densely populated NE Philly and up around Mount Laurel and Cherry Hill, NJ who wrote letters to the FCC until the Horsham channel was shut down.

The original WPEN standards format played big band & true standards primarily for an audience born in the 1920’s to 1940’s. Those still living are in their 80”s & 90’s & probably shouldn’t be driving or would have no idea HD exists. WRDV is one of the very few stations appealing to that audience.

when WRFF HD was off I was able to get and record WAXQ "Q104.3" classic rock out of NYC! Its been so long since I was able to get that.
WPST not having HD means I can get WIBG-FM from Avelon, NJ and WDSB out of Dover, DE with DX tropo!
Its glorious!
Pretty good when you consider I'm only 8.9 miles away from WPST's transmitter!
