Munch Bishop out at WTAM?

I just noticed this past weekend that I hadn't heard him in a while. He was only on sporadically anyway, usually fill in work, an occaisional evening show, and a Saturday afternoon show. WTAM is pretty much all paid programming Saturday afternoons. Still unhappy that they cut the Car Pro to 1 hour to make room for paid programming. iHeart has killed that once great station.

Munch had been on WARF 1350 for the last several years (first in afternoons, then moved to mornings when they became "The Gambler" in early pre-Covid 2020 and shifted gears to become a Cleveland targeted station) until last summer, when he had his heart surgery.

1350 - which had aired Fox Sports Radio's morning show "2 Pros and A Cup of Joe" (featuring former Browns QB Brady Quinn) while Munch was on the mend, then decided to just stick with it, leaving Munch with only his Saturday gig on 1100/106.9.

Since then, Munch has just been slowly phased out.

At 70, he may not want to go through the daily grind anymore (especially after his health scare), and WTAM would rather make a couple of bucks with paid programming on Saturdays, then pay someone to do a once a week local show.

On Sunday afternoons, WTAM runs Fox Sports Radio (simulcasting with the Gambler) - especially during football season, until the Browns game ends, when weeknight guy Dennis Manoloff comes in to do a postgame show.

IHeart talk stations have long surrendered weekends to infomercials and cheap syndicated stuff...it's not just a WTAM thing.

I knew he had cut way back since his health scare, but he seems completely out of the picture now. He used to do pregame for the Cavs and Guardians, and fill ins for Snyder in the mornings but that all seems to be gone now. It just seems odd to me the way he just disappeared without a mention. I wish him the best and hope his health is good.

These big corporate stations don't like to have people that age on the air. Period. It does not matter how popular they are or what kind of ratings they get. Once you hit 70, forget it. Even a 5-star performer and major ratings generator like John Lanigan was pushed out.

No, he wasn't pushed out, he left on his own. Otherwise why would they let him come back and do that bit with Triv? I think he just got tired of all the B.S. from the Overlords and said the hell with it.

Triv was in his 70s. Had he not died, he would still be on the air. As for Lanigan, he had been mailing it in for the last several years. I think he would have retired sooner, but the corporate big wigs kept dangling lots of money in front of him.

it's true that management likes younger workers because they can pay them less, witness all the youth on local TV news now.
But the other issue is the Baby Boomers are realizing they, too, are mortal and even if they are on top of their game and producing for the boss, we are seeing that some don't want to die in the saddle and are retiring to enjoy the rest of their lives on their terms. Jeff Kinzbach, Jim Isabella and Steve French are just a few who have recently opted out to do just that.

And Denny Sanders, long-time Afternoon Drive host on WMMS, when they were one of the nations most celebrated and influential
Rock radio stations, left Telos and now is the afternoon drive host on "Kool Kat Oldies" 1380AM WDLW in Lorain. Must be fun.

It's a shame 1380 doesn't reach the Cleveland area, at least not where I am. Is Denny still there? I don't see him on the 1380 personalities page.

Denny left the station last October. The new owner/general manager decided that he could do the show himself in order to save money and he sounds just awful. Such a shame, because Denny still had it, did some great interviews and always added some cool facts about what he was playing. From what I understand, he is hanging it up for good after this experience. I can't blame him.
