A Big Day For Christmas Flips

While a number of stations had already gone all-Christmas, today (November 18th, 2022) marked a big day for Christmas flips in some medium, large and major markets where there hadn't been any previous all-Christmas stations this year.

Among those in the Northeast are:

* WMJX-106.7 in my hometown of Boston.

* WLTW-106.7 in New York.

* WALK-97.5 on Long Island.

* WSHH-99.7 in Pittsburgh.

* WFPG-96.1 in Atlantic City.

* WWLI-105.1 in Providence.

* WHUD-100.7 in the Hudson Valley just north of New York City.

* WBMW-106.5 in Eastern Connecticut.

One notable flip to all-Christmas today outside of the Northeast was KOIT-96.5 San Francisco/Oakland.

Radio-Locator.com at this writing (8 P.M. EST November 18th) has 171 stations listed (combining both the United States and Canada) that have switched to all-Christmas formats. However, none of the nine flips I noted above have yet been posted on that website. But as there have been other all-Christmas flips today not noted in this post, the actual number of all-Christmas stations may be well over 200.

I posted elsewhere about three flips in New Hampshire and Vermont: WHOM, WJJR and WSNI. Maybe Radio-Locator will acknowledge WHOM, a major station in northern New England, but stations in Rutland and Keene? Probably not. All three are still listed as Adult Contemporary as of right now.

Radio-Locator has already added WSUS in Franklin, NJ, population 4,900. Sussex County, where WSUS is located, does not have a single municipality with a population of more than 25,000. Therefore, I think that all of the stations you mentioned will be added by Sunday afternoon.

As of 5 P.M. EST Saturday, November 18th, Radio Locator.com's listing of the number of stations in North America that have gone all-Christmas has leaped from 171 to 246 over the past 24 or so hours.

This number is probably a tad low; I would think the actual number is slightly more than 250.

There will probably be several more all-Christmas flips at the beginning (Monday, November 21st) and at the end (Friday, November 25th, a/k/a "Black Friday") of this coming week. For example, four stations in New England that usually go all-Christmas (WRCH-100.5 Hartford, WZID-95.7 in Manchester, New Hampshire, along with WEBE-107.9 and WEZN-99.9 in southwest Connecticut) haven't yet done so, nor has Long Island's WKJY-98.3.

WRCH has been among the later flippers for a long time. Other than one year in which WDRC-FM challenged RCH's holiday-season dominance with a deep playlist of Christmas oldies that actually hurt DRC's ratings more than RCH's, RCH has had no opposition. There's no pressure on RCH to flip any earlier than right around Thanksgiving. The competition keeps its distance.

Two stations on Long Island have already flipped to Christmas music. One is WALK-FM (97.5) Patchogue, which serves most of Long Island. The other is WELJ (104.7) Montauk, which serves the easternmost part of Long Island. Both stations can be heard in parts of Connecticut, and WELJ can also be heard in the southern part of Rhode Island.

I don't know when for sure but WRVR 104.5 in Memphis has flipped to Christmas music. So far WHHM 107.7 in Henderson/Jackson, TN hasn't flipped, but probably will soon.

WTJS 93.1 in Jackson, TN has flipped to Christmas music, along with probably most other stations that carry Salem's AC CCM feed.

Over the weekend and part of Monday WTJS was transmitting dead air. Yesterday they were back on for a while with both talk from Salem and also the Christmas music feed overlapping before going back to Christmas music. I just hope this doesn't mean they're going back to talk after Christmas. West TN doesn't need another FM News/Talk station.

AC CCM and secular Christmas music, along with the most popular easy listening Christmas music, but more that you probably wouldn't like.
I didn't think I would like it but I was wondering if they did anything secular.

On the subject of secular, if "Carol of the Bells" is an instrumental, it can be Christian because Ray Conniff is one of those who have done a version that changed the lyrics to give it a Christian message.

I think I've heard Conniff's version on WAY-FM but I actually like instrumental versions better.
Sleigh Ride is another Christmas song that I like instrumental versions better.

At the end, though, Conniff's version sounds more like Halloween.

I hated Steve and Eydie's, the first version I ever heard. It was on a record my parents had. I've heard that version on America's Best Music. Of course, I like a lot of Steve and Eydie's music, regardless of the time of year, and a lot of Steve's and a lot of Eydie's.
