Dick Clark Wins New Year's Eve

Once again, Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve with Ryan Seacrest was the top TV show for New Year's Eve. But for the second year, Nashville's Big Bash on CBS was a strong #2. Miley Cyrus on NBC was also a strong player:

However, most people I spoke with said they were watching the Peach Bowl on ESPN.

Eww, Miley Cyrus. Our family tried to watch for a few minutes when Nashville went to commercials. The content was definitely not for a general audience whatsoever. I can't believe Dolly Parton is involved with her!
Nashville's Big Bash on CBS was awesome. Great to see Brooks & Dunn again, Darius Rucker sang some old Hootie songs, and Zac Brown Band was definitely a highlight of the night. Zac looked great.
What little I saw of Rockin' Eve 'on tape' was the same ole' same ole'.

We did our usual 'follow the time zones' tradition - KXAS Lone Star NYE Dallas @ 10, the Potato Drop from KTVB Boise @ 11, and the Space Needle in Seattle (for the first time post-COVID) @ midnight. Which celebration was the best? Dallas. Seattle's fireworks were very hard to see on KING 5 because there was leftover smoke everywhere. Disappointing return to in-person, normal NYE celebrations at the Seattle Center. Like Dallas, they did use drones mixed with the fireworks. But the Reunion Tower celebration was clear, fireworks were great, and the drones were even better - especially seeing the rotary telephone ringing! That was a clever idea by the organizers.

CNN's ratings suffered when they instituted an "alcohol ban" for Anderson Cooper and Andy Cohen this year. While I respect CNN's decision, at the same time part of the fun for many viewers was to watch Cooper and Cohen just let loose, let their guards down, be "human" for a few hours and laugh and be lighthearted, then take shot after shot to the point of just standing there and giggling, This year wasn't as entertaining.

If CNN's New Year's Eve ratings plunged this year, might the network abandon it's big New Year's Eve special and instead just carry a ten-minute cut-in (11:55 P.M.-12:05 A.M. EST) to show the ball drop in Times Square, but otherwise stick to regular programming?

Given how well "Nashville's Big Bash" has done in the two years it's been on network TV, and how popular country music is, I'm surprised that no network had televised it until last year.

I think it's safe to say that it's going to be a long-term tradition for CBS to carry a country music New Year's special from Nashville. As for NBC and Miley Cyrus, I don't know if it is going to become a long-term tradition. It might if the network tries Cyrus again next year and gets strong ratings.

One would think that with country music's popularity, there would have been a New Year's Eve country music-themed special on a major broadcast network for many years before December 31st, 2021.

Just two years? That is surprising.

I watched Nashville's Music Note Drop both years. This is a great way to celebrate the arrival of the new year in the Central Time Zone.

For several years, CNN and NBC had done cut-ins from Nashville in their Times Square coverage. Fox News also originated a NYE show from one of the downtown bars. But what changed things is that the producer of the CMA Awards made a deal with the city and offered it to CBS, which had been looking for a NYE show.

ZBB, Kelsea Ballerini and Lainey Wilson were the acts getting the biggest push, all made a very positive impression. I wish we got more performances from Elle King and Jimmie Allen, the co-hosts. The one rockabilly-style song Elle did was great, but Jimmie was limited to that horrible country/hip-hop mashup with Flo Rida. Also, Elle and Dierks Bentley were both there, but no one thought to put them together to do their current duet, "Worth a Shot"? I thought big-audience TV shows like this were a must for promoting singles.

If I recall, CBS used to have a handful of country stars performing on 'Happy New Year, America' in the 1980s/early 1990s. There were also R&B and adult contemporary acts included, too. CBS tried to counter the younger demographic on Dick Clark, but the ratings weren't as good. Louise Mandrell was featured on the 1985-86 broadcast.

I watch the new year come in with the ball drop in Times Square. And I skip over the "music".

I did see some of Miley's special since I recorded it, but mostly the funny stuff. The music wasn't worth hearing.
