40 miles northwest of downtown Chicago.....

Days: Pretty much empty, although sometimes WMBD from Peoria sneaks in. Less commonly, WIBD (ex WBKV) from West Bend, WI makes it to my location, 2.5kw with an unfavorable pattern towards my direction, about 80 miles north of me.

Nights: Pretty much all WMBD all the tim. Easily the strongest and most reliable skywave signal on any of the former "regional" ((class III) channels, I've also heard KWSL from Sioux City, IA and WOHO from Toledo, but not recently. (I think WOHO is now defunct).

Retro: Speaking of defunct ...1470 here used to be a very weak signal from long-gone WMPP from south swsuburban Chicago Heights, IL.

East Tennessee: WBQR, what I call Conspiracy Talk 1470, Alcoa TN. WTZE, Tazewell VA makes it in around sunset. Nothing else comes to mind. -Retro-other: Dayton, Ohio area would bring the former WHUT, Anderson IN (later WGNR), or a weak WOHO (now defunct) Toledo, OH

WWNN - Pompano Beach FL - True Oldies Channel (around sunset)

WRGA - Rome GA - Newstalk 98.7 - 1470 News, talk (nights)

kw - Melbourne FL (30 miles south of KSC)

From the southwest suburbs of Chicago...

The 1470 story here starts with the long-gone WMPP Chicago Heights, Ill., a 1 kW local that went silent (as WCFJ) on 11/7/2015.

Since then, WMBD Peoria has been the dominant station, including last night. It's a Fox affiliate and runs Coast To Coast overnight, plus Bradley Braves basketball and Chicago Bears football. It's in weak during the day, at least this time of year, without using the loop. With the loop it's an easy listen.

I haven't gotten anything new on 1470 since the days I used Radio Shack equipment. The others: WOHO Toledo (RIP); CHOW Welland, Ont. (500 watts night); WKMF Flint, Mich. (2015 relpg as WFNY); and WHUT Anderson, Ind.

WSAN Allentown is a fainitish but steady Oldies during the day here.
WJDY from DelMarVa popped in one SSS (they used to be quite a regular sundown visitor via the water path up to JFK Airport).
One night WMMW from Central CT was there, 2500 watts but with a null away from the direction of Allentown and, generally, us. Taped ID. They are now 'WBOM'.
One November morning four years ago the wife was making breakfast and I had the GE SR2 at the table, getting a station with the customary and phoenetically confusing calls plus an odd COL. Some gal was doing a long local weather, and there were other programmin details. On a whim, plus a phone, I called up a WBTX in Virginia to ask if I had heard them. The PD called back the next day (Monday), said yes, that was they, and that was his wife doing that weather. He asked if I could do a liner for him over the phone. Sure; I'd call back with one.
There must be considerable doubt if they ever used it. 'Hi! This is Steve Green from Pennsylvania .... and every year when we turn the clocks back an hour, we make sure and tune into WBTX.'

A weak KWAY Waverly, IA during the day. Nighttime is usually WMBD Peoria. I've also heard KWSL from Sioux City, IA on occasion. Haven't explored this much since I have to null out a local on 1450 to hear other signals clearly at night. East-central Iowa.

WMBD 1470 is fairly regularly heard in Scandinavia.

WFNT 1470 got a new transmitter recently. Would be better North of Chicago, best in the early morning hours between Sunrise in Flint and Sunrise in Chicago. Heard it once while South of Sheboygan in the early 1970s as WKMF, before and after Sunset by nulling WMBD. Now WIBD, formerly WBKV 1470 West Bend is 2500 watts Day and Night.

Here in Wood Dale, IL in the near NW suburb of Chicago:

Daytime: Same situation as the others. Heard WMBD during day on few occasions in the past.
Nighttime: WMBD dominant at night

DX/RETRO: Not much DX done on this frequency mainly due to WMBD domination at night. Stations heard: KWSL (Sioux City, IA), WHUT (Anderson, IN), WVOL (Berry Hill, TN), and the two stations that are no longer on 1470 kHz: CHOW (Welland, ON) and WQSN (Kalamazoo, MI) which moved to the expanded band (1660 kHz).

Back in the Sixties, there were wholly-sponsored overnights on stations. I remember only the ones overnight into Monday's sunup.
WABC 770 had DeCarlo real estate and Dennison's Clothier.
WBT 1110 and others had Dolly Holiday and the Holiday Inn.
WCBS 880 had Americann Airlines Music 'Til Dawn.
XERF 1570 had Uncle George's Record Shop in Hollywood.

So I ask if there are others here who recall WMBD Peoria being sponsored by the Adans Street Supermarket ?

From west Houston Texas (about 100 miles WSW of WCJ), daytime is slop from local KBRZ 1460. Around sunset, it's a mix of KWRD (classic country) from Henderson TX, XEAI (usually ballads) Mexico City, and KYYW (news/talk) Abilene TX, with KLCL Lake Charles in there with the radio pointed their way. Nights are a jumble with all of the above. At sunrise, more of the same.

With apologies for the veer, I don't remember that one. But I do remember "Big John's Barbecue" pf Peoria as a lomgtime WIRL sponsor. The place was actually under an overpaas on Interstate 74, completely out of view from the highway. It was a favorite of a friend from Peoria, told me how to find it, And I was forever in her debt, The barbecue was phenomenal!

Chicago by the lakeshore:

Daytime: Usually nothing. Occasionally you can catch a whiff of WMBD in Peoria but that's it.

Nighttime/Critical Hours: My experience is a little different from the other Chicago area people... WMBD is generally the most powerful but you can hear others, especially near sunset. I've logged WRPU in Anderson IN, KWAY in Waverly IA, WVOL in Berry Hill TN, and most recently in my new(ish) place, WFNT in Flint Michigan.

I heard a station Monday January 10 on 1470 that mentioned Area Code 701 in a Spot around 5:00 to 5:30 PM EST. I assume it was KHND Harvey, ND. They also mentioned Ada, but neither Ada, MN or Ada, ND is that close. Could have been a state news story. The 1470 in Brooklyn Park, MN, KMNQ is DA and doesn't radiate much toward my location near Pellston, MI, and is Spanish. Also WLOL 1330 was coming in with a Teaching Religion format at the time though.

I interned at the late 1470 in Toledo, known at that point as WLQR, in 1999 and 2000 as a senior at the University of Toledo. They were all sports by that time as "The Ticket". Most of the locals I knew still called 1470 WOHO.
I believe power was 1,000 watts (at least during the day) from three towers off Pickle Road in Oregon, Ohio, southeast of downtown Toledo by a few miles. Can't find the pattern offhand, but it was hamstrung by quite a few nulls. I remember losing it pretty quickly heading toward Columbus via 23, but they had a better lobe in the general direction of Findlay and Lima. Solid null in the general direction of Peoria.

The Dolly Holiday show, an overnight good-music show sent on tape to affiliates and hosted by Dotty Abbott as Dolly Holiday, was carried by a number of stations, including KOA Denver and KOB Albuquerque. It came out of Memphis, Holiday Inn headquarters. And Music 'Til Dawn (1953-1970) was on most CBS O-and-Os (WCAU Philadelphia the exception), plus WWL, WLW, WJR/CKLW/WJR at various times, and KRLD Dallas, American Airlines' home, with local hosts playing music mostly selected by the program planners at CBS New York.

I believe that to have Ben sponsored by American Airlines. The tail end of an episode begins the full day recording of WLW from November 22, 1963 you’ll find on YouTube.

WPTF in Raleigh NC ran Dolly Holliday in the overnights for a period. Two 7" reel-to-reel players, an old cart machine feeding a Sure mixer. Was something to listen to in the overnights.

From NW San Antonio:

Day: Heavy splatter from local 1480 KCHL. I have heard KYYW in Abilene during winter daytime skywave.

Sunset: KYYW comes up amidst the splatter, as does country station KDHN in Dimmit, TX, and classic country/news/sports KWRD in Henderson, TX. Eventually XEAI in Mexico City shows up.

Night: KCHL drops to 90 watts and is much less of a pest. XEAI is most dominant, but aiming NE I hear KWRD in/out, and sometimes KLCL in Lake Charles will pop up with news talk. On rare occasions, sports station KGND in Vinita, OK, will mix in. Aiming NW, KDHN sometimes can be heard under XEAI.

Sunrise: KWRD is stronger at day power, and KDHN still pops in and out. KYYW dominates when it goes to day power.

DX/Retro: I've heard classic hits KSMM in Liberal, KS, once. Also, I used to hear XEHI in Cd. Miguel Alemán fairly often at sunset/night/sunrise before it was retired.
