Scott Slade Leaves Atlanta's Morning News

All Access reported this morning that Scott Slade is stepping away from Atlanta's Morning News on WSB after 32 years. The press release said that after some time off to recharge, he will be creating something new for WSB that "reflects his passion for listeners and the community."

Since I moved to Atlanta in 1994, my clock radio has gone off to WSB every morning. As a DXer growing up in Baltimore, I used to hear WSB at night all the time. Scott Slade has been my favorite personality over my years here. He has the perfect voice and delivery for that show, which I am told was created in response to the Gulf War in 1990. Former WSB GM (and later Cox Radio President) Bob Neal deserves credit for envisioning how good Slade would be hosting that show.

Slade is indeed wonderful at his craft. 'SB might as well move Von Haessler to 8am and put another hour of "I did not believe it for one second" Hannity into Theocracy Afternoons.

I don't see a date, suggesting that Mr. Slade may be stepping away immediately?

With the way that they have sliced and diced Sean's show into filler, I wonder how it's actually doing.

Sean really no longer fits the format. While Eric has gone a bit further right in presentation since he has gone national, he still is not as rabid as Sean. With Sean being on only one hour and followed by a fluffy drive-time show, it just no longer works for the one hour. Add in all of the news and traffic, Sean for one hour is a waste. It is definitely not destination listening as you might get on some of the 3 hour shows.

I would agree with that. Erick has ticked to the right, but he refuses to kowtow to the same "canned" right-wing POV as Rush did and Hannity does. And EvH is much more libertarian--he fills the Neal Boortz slot nicely, and with a better sense of humor for a younger audience.

Add in Shelley Wynter, and WSB has a very thought-provoking, heterodox lineup.

Mark Arum isn't my bag, but he does do a good show.

Hannity is the odd man out. I'd rather WSB bring back Clark Howard.

I agree that the overall lineup is good. Shelly Wynter is a smart guy but sometimes the abrupt change that happens after the news and the intro to his show can be jarring.

I just wonder if Clark was removed from WSB because his audience is even older than the normal talk radio crowd.

If he was still alive, I would love for an hour of "Ralph from Ben Hill". For those that do not know him, he was on WGST at night for a number of years. When WGST moved to 640, their signal was strong on the southside at night, so they programmed to target that audience. I often listened to Ralf and respected his ability to think for himself. You never knew where he would land on an issue. He reminded me a lot of Neil Bortz when he was on WRNG and was a real Libertarian.

When he left radio, Clark Howard made it sound like he was ready to work less by stepping back from a daily show. He was 65 at the time.

I'd guess he might still be doing it, if the show had been producing multi-millions in revenue. But I'm sure it was declining, largely because of Dave Ramsey taking over the business/personal finance niche on talk radio.

If I was WSB's PD:

5-9am Atlanta’s Morning News
9-noon Von Haessler
Noon-3 Mark Kaye
3-6pm Mark Arum
6-7pm Sixty at 6 (news recap)
7-10pm Word on the Street
10pm-1am Something local and light (like David Paul’s old WSB show)
1am-5am Red Eye Radio

No more Hannity, no more Chin Dimple.

Ralph from Ben Hill was fantastic. Like you said, you never could predict where he would land on an issue, and whether or not you agreed with him there was mutual respect, be it with callers or listeners. Because of that, he could take far-left-wing positions on issues and still have respectful fun.

I think he did 6 or 7 PM to 10 on WGST. I can't remember if he came on right after the Kimmer or if there was a news hour at 6.

Come to think of it, the Kimmer was a real libertarian back then, too, unlike his recent/current time on the radio.

Ralph was taken from us far too soon.

Plus when the channel 2 weather team only had two or three meteorologists Scott would fill in and do the weather. Now with a recent debut channel two is back to 5 on air meterologists. Channel 46 just hired their 7th.

If I'm not mistaken, I remember hearing Scott on V103 (I think) sometime in the late 80's (before he was at WSB). If I remember correctly, he had his daughter with him while he was on the air. I remember remarking to myself about his voice and how smooth it was.

Always enjoy his voice. Since Neal Boortz left, Scott was my #1 voice of reason.
Maybe his own show to take over Sean's spot would be nice

Mark Kaye was on WSB, briefly for a few weeks last year. Seems like they were just testing him in Atlanta market. Because after a couple of weeks... Poof, gone! 🤔 Sometimes they'd air him on Saturday nights but. But now they air Tony Katz Today (which I'm not crazy about).

But I really liked the Mark Kaye show a lot. It was the usual political, conservative talk show but he was funny. He also plays a game with the callers called "What the Bleep?". His comedy and energy reminded me a little of Greg Guttfteld on FNC. So I don't know what happened to him. 😥

I have to say tho, Erik Erickson has actually grown on me since we lost Rush. But I truly wish they would bring back Mark Kaye full time.
