January 2023 Bay Area Radio PPM Ratings

While all people from Latin America are "Americans", a huge percentage of the Hispanics in San Francisco are not U.S. Citizens. Among Spanish dominants, most are not citizens and that means they are simply "Mexican" or "Salvadoran" and so on; these are the listeners to Spanish language radio.
Do you think the Spanish formatted radio is oversaturated in San Francisco/San Jose?

Spanish is not a format, it is a language. There are many different formats in that language, in fact, there are more than there are in English. But only a few are viable in the US. Still there are only three format alternatives in core area of the San Francisco market (excluding Santa Rosa). That is hardly over saturated.

What is the situation with 92.3 KSJO also? They don’t subscribe to any ratings. Are they still trying to sell? I know they talked to Cumulus but that fell through.

That was just a local marketing agreement under Universal Media Access. Silicon Valley Asian Media Group fully owns the station now.

Is there any reason KDOW 1220 doesn’t subscribe to ratings? Their daytime coverage is practically the entire market and they are owned by a relatively large player (Salem).

Same for KNEW 960

There are three Salem stations in the SFBA market (KDOW/KFAX/KTRB). Does Salem subscribe for any of them? My understanding is that a group owner can't cherry-pick anything less than their full stable of stations in a market cluster.

KNEW's weird. It's owned by iHeart, but LMA'ed to Bloomberg and airs the WBBR (NYC) schedule nearly 24-7. In such a situation, which company is the Nielsen subscriber? iHeart must subscribe for the rest of the cluster, so you'd think KNEW would be included, but you almost never see a published 6+ share for the station.

Stations with low shares will not get any ratings based agency business, so ratings are an unnecessary expense. KDOW has a usable signal over a little less than 4 million people in a market of 8.2 million.

Both stations are business information formatted, and that is a narrow audience that is sold on content, not on audience size. If agency buys come in, it is from "business to business" accounts, not mass market ones

KDOW's programming is more along the lines of selling time to various investment hucksters; not really to be taken seriously. KNEW/Bloomberg is a credible business news source, so I wouldn't want to lump it in with KDOW.
