RIP KMED-AM Medford (1926-2023)

And more DX. I'd love to hear WCBS NYC once in WA...just once, hear the sounds of "WCBS news time" and traffic on the 8s. Too many stations in the way on 880, even KRVN.

I assume 1440 will be the battle of Alberta and The Dalles, maybe a bit of KVON Napa. Topeka KS would be nice, as would be the 'lamptimer' KAZG Scottsdale.

I caught KWIP 880 ONCE from SE Wy, just a mere 300 miles or so from KRVN.

How?

In the 4 seconds it took KRVN to switch from night to day patterns, KWIP bubbled up and ran a legal ID

They are taking 1440 into "retirement" on January 8th. Programming will remain on FM at 106.7 and 99.3 (Grants Pass) and will also move to KYVL-106.3 on that date. I assume, going dark.
Sad for old timers. When I got interested in radio as a career (I know, today that is almost an oxymoron) I had been a medium wave DXer located in NE Ohio. KMED was the Monday morning* bellwether station that indicated an opening to the Pacific Northwest.

Co-channel KPRO in Riverside, CA, was likewise an indication of an opening to the Southwest.

* Before increased equipment reliability made it unnecessary, most stations that were otherwise 24 hour a day operations signed off at midnight on Sunday night, opening up chances to hear stations on channels normally blocked by all-nighters in one's local time zone.

They're still on this a.m., January 9th, with C2C, KMED newscasts, Medford area weather, and Hugh Hewitt.

Looks like they aren't pulling the plug until sometime later today.

CKJR is in better than usual, with a lot of 60's and early 70's oldies, IDing as "W-1440". KODL is MIA.

Last I checked, two nights ago, KMED is still on 1440, IDing as KMED and KCND. I heard bits of their morning show a few mornings back, too.

1440 is officially KYVL now. Top of the hour ID is still KMED or ???
KYVL 1440 notified the FCC they were going HD?
I only see the FM KMED notified that they were adding HD.

I'm still hearing KMED at night.... two nights ago it was with C2C. Obviously, they're still on the air. Not complaining, however.....

KAZG would be a good catch, indeed. With 52 watts at night, I barely hear them in Mesa, about 20 miles away.

And in a plot twist...
FCC reports KCMX-880 is defunct. Was news/talk. The station turned in the license on March 13th, and had been on the air since 1962.

Wonder how many houses will be built on the that land. Oh I see KYVL 1440 is still there and 730 KRZX. Thats a busy tower.

The transmitter apparently suffered some catastrophic failure and the manufacturer couldnt supply parts and theyre exploring current avenues to repair it, but everyone they spoke to said parts are 6 to 8 weeks out.

almsot 2 months to the day after the STA was filed to be silent, they requested cancellation.
