The Vine is Going Away…

For the last couple of days I've been hearing it in Elk Grove loud and clear (obviously on their night time power as they do periodically) but in the middle of the Dixe Cups song it went to dead air and then no signal. I hope this is not the uncerimonious end of their 25 years.

Agreed. They've obviously been using the night site during the day at 2500watts because they've been crystal clear up here north of Sacramento.

Today the signal is noticeably reduced (only one bar instead of two) but still more than before. It was barely audible in Elk Grove during the day previously.

Good news, the 50's-60's Oldies are still playing as of today. I know it's doubtful, but maybe the new owner will keep the format.

I hear them reference "America's Best Music", were they an ABM affiliate at one time?

Threshold Communications, the owners of KVIN, sold off today their Medford signal. KORJ 97.7 went for $105K. Buyer is Opus Broadcasting, a local Southern Oregon outfit.

Oh yes, I have been really enjoying KVIN . I am hearing a lot of tunes that might not even make it to MeTVFM.

That KORJ has a very unique, one of a kind format, basically real soothing new age, ambient instrumentals. Threshold most likely was making much money, but I give them credit for bringing interesting radio, with music not heard elsewhere,, or with KVIN very few places.

Will have to find a new place to stream those great songs from a great era when The Vine goes away. But still playing as of today.

So that basically leaves KRVR, the Modesto rimshot with a Copperopolis COL (yet can’t be heard 15 miles away in Valley Springs) as Threshold’s last radio property.

Do they make any money off of the River? And I’m presuming that’s getting sold off as well?

I know they carried ABM in the late 00’s. Probably had been an affiliate for some while.

i was listening yesterday afternoon and could barely hear them up here north of Sacramento (normal). I then punched back in around 4:30 and they were booming in like a local station. Still that way today. Obviously they switched to the night pattern and wattage around that time. I'm wondering if that's faulty equipment or intentional.

I was quite impressed with the Manteca 107.1 translator coverage along I-5 and west a bit towards the Bay Area.... but ..

The sales consumption was filed today. The end is near....

The last song played on KVIN was Don McLean's "American Pie" followed by a male making an announcement saying they were signing off for good. It was silent by 23:59 and the carrier turned off a couple minutes later. I was listening on 920 AM and did not check the FM translator on 107.1 that is also in range here.

Well there's still 50K watts KYNO 940 that has a good signal all over the valley including Sacramento
Let's bring this down to earth. You can listen if if you don't mind lots of static on your car radio in Sacramento. You'd have to be an old radio geek to do that. The .5 mv/m contour makes it to just north of Stockton and the 2 mv/m makes it to about Atwater. So that leaves 5 mv/m from about Chowchilla to about Tipton. And this is with the facility at full power.

and here's how it can sound in Alaska 2300 miles away:

I will miss THE VINE 920 AM... I loved their jingles, 95% of their OLDIES music selections (from the 50's-60's & 70's) and the fact that unlike other similar OLDIES formatted stations, KVIN was consistent.
Unfortunately, some stations today break their format with infomercials, and/or other types of music genres, and that isn't what you came to hear. EXAMPLE. WISL AM from Pennsylvania. They play OLDIES, almost all of the time, but earlier today had POLKA music. I listen to radio streams and would like to see the output quality consistent too. KRAE AM from Wyoming is often overmodulated, distorted and unlistenable from time-to-time. I listen on CC Web Radio and Radio apps on my phone.
