Howie's column on Entercom/Audacy

With all the Audacy talk I was curious to find out when their deal with the Red Sox is to expire. This 2021 Globe article says it is through 2028 (no idea how much money)

>>The previous deal would have concluded in 2023, with the team holding an option for ’24.

I agree with Howie, they should put WRKO on an FM 'stick', especially now with the success of the Grace Curley
Show, who is attracting a younger demographic to talk radio.

I do wonder what iHeart has done to get WRKO's ratings up quite a bit (at least in the 12+ numbers) from where they were under Entercom/Audacy. Grace Curley is newish of course, but Kuhner and Howie have been there under Audacy as well as the financial exchange.

Of iHeart's station, which would you say is worth cutting revenue to bring WRKO to FM. WBZ is also owned by iHeart, and I would presume that to be in a higher priority to be put on FM, while they haven't done so yet.

WXKS talk 1200 is on the HD3 of WZLX.
How many have HD radios? In the connected car, streaming more likely to be found. WRKO is on tunein.
Some cars also have aux jack--plug phone in via adapter--and Android Auto or a similar Apple iPhone app.
(Android Auto was working with my Samsung A13 but for some reason not the A14--maybe faulty USB cable..the feature also allows Waze GPS maps to shoe up on car display).
For this, plug one end into USB jack...
other end into your phone.

Older tech: get a mini FM transmitter.
Put phone on WRKO streaming. Plug the transmitter into phone jack and select an open FM frequency.

Having said that, there are some interesting points in that column, including that someone dumped 7 million shares of Audacy stock last Friday.
And they went and spent it all at McDonalds on a single meal.

Jeff, Grace and Howie are live and LOCAL. They are entertaining their audience and are great at selling the advertiser message. I know the 6 and up numbers look good but most of the audience is over 54 so the billing isn’t great. Still, very few markets have two heritage AMs in the top 10.
WRKO continues to perform

They are both on FM. WZLX HD2 and they sound really good. Time for a new car?
I will not open that door again. The great "if an HD Radio plays in the woods, and nobody is there to hear it, does it make a noise" argument. All joking aside, HD Radio doesn't have the reach that would be viable to constitute being equal of an analog FM signal.

What constitutes "success"? Not being snarky, just wondering.

Also, do we have any proof that Grace is attracting a younger demo...or is that just a feeling you have.

Who said it's supposed to be equal to an analog FM signal?

Is Grace doing a Boston-only show in addition to her syndicated show? Or did the syndication end?

WFEA Manchester NH site still lists her. Not sure if still on WTSN Dover NH, WTPL Concord area NH or WEMJ Laconia NH.
Probably still on WNTK in NH

I'll be socratic with your reply. If it's not supposed to be equal to an FM signal, then why do members here always say that stations like WRKO and WBZ 1030 are available on HD2s, when people here request to bring such stations to FM?

In other words, is it a suitable substitution to the initial request? What is a suitable substitution is streaming, as it is virtually equally available to a full powered analog FM signal, than that of an HD2/3 signal. Actually, streaming is available at further range than that of an analog FM signal.

Because it’s an added option.
