New Miami Beach Studios

SiriusXM is opening new studios in Miami Beach. This seems surprising, after the broadcaster let go a number of associates. They already broadcast from Los Angeles, New York, Nashville, and Washington D.C.
It was also announced that they will be using the new digs to introduce a channel broadcasting current Latin hits. Perhaps the Miami Beach studios are an indication of an expansion of Spanish language programming?:

The crossover appeal of current Latin Pop... "reggaetón and more"... was seen at Coachella the last two weekends with many non-Hispanics following Becky G and Bad Bunny and their crews. And English dominant younger Hispanics have been attracted to reggaetón, and in many markets this has caused a decline in Hispanic use of Urban contemporary stations such as Hot 97, WQHT, in New York.

So, if Sirius/XM feels that they may now need a presence in this music, doing a channel from Miami makes sense. Their efforts in Latin music in the past have all failed, including a very expensive custom studio and contract with Regional Mexican morning personality Piolín some years ago.

Oh god yes... Piolin Radio. That was a huge failure. Channel 147, which is now Rural Radio. As a matter of fact, with the exception of Caliente on 150 (now at 151) and En Vivo (still there on 152), the Latin category is mainly online-only which doesn't help Latinos who may want to subscribe to SiriusXM on traditional in-car plans.

XM started wrong in trying to attract Hispanics. In association with HBC, they presented 5 music channels. All were required to use the Lee Abrams vision of wider playlists and lots of new music. That effort failed due to unfocused music and lack of promotion in Hispanic communities. And, after a couple of years XM cancelled the HBC deal so the music channels could go non-commercial and they delegated the music programming to people with no radio experience.

Channel 13 (Pitbull’s Globalization) already plays the above mentioned artists with great frequency. And they are Miami based with some DJs from Houston, LA and NYC.

I’m somewhat skeptical about a “Latin Pop” channel that might be a push to siphon off Reguetón’s popularity by promoting dull acts like Kalis Uchis or the new Menudo. Latinos are not listening to that industry promoted dribble.

How many Latin Pop (CHR or whatever it is called in English) stations play Pitbull any more... other than an occasional (or "rare") play of an old song. They don't play El General, either.

Putting an artist who is pretty much "over" on the label for that channel certainly dates it, and the format seems to mostly be mixes with a lot of kind'a off the wall stuff. A lot of the mixes may work in clubs, but they are not Alex Sensation quality at all.

"Latin Pop" is a term for what in English we called Top 40 and now call CHR. Today, that format is almost entirely reggaetón and friends.

The "new" Menudo is barely formed, and has just one rather mediocre (I could not even watch the whole video) release from last week. It's not even run by the original group's creator, Edgardo Díaz.

The new Miami SiriusXM studios were first announced in October2022, so they were likely too far along when the recent financial situation happened.

The announcement today has more specifics:

I thought I was responding to this thread that was posted first:

From that press release it said “ including the long-awaited launch of Hits Uno, a Spanish Contemporary Pop channel that fills a significant void in its Latin music options. Available on car receivers as Channel 321, Hits Uno takes a Top 40 turn by focusing on acts such as Bad Bunny, Becky G, Bizarrap, Camilo, Karol G, Maluma, Rauw Alejandro, Rosalía, and Sebastian Yatra”

And I responded to David, Channel 13 Pitbull’s Globalization already plays those artist. Along with Top 40 acts that have current hits. They’ll play dance( John Summit) and were playing Morgan Wallen early on and still do. I don’t get paid to promote Pitbull but he’s respected in the Miami Hip Hop scene, collaborates with Pop, Rap and Reguetón artists and is even a Nascar owner. Oh yeah, and he’ll be at the opening of the studios. From the article:

Also broadcasting special shows from the studios at 2340 Collins Avenue will be ANDY COHEN on TUESDAY, plus performances by BAILEY ZIMMERMAN, CARLOS VIVES, and the JONAS BROTHERS, the debut of the new HITS UNO channel, a BON JOVI special celebrating the 35th anniversary of the "NEW JERSEY" album, a special interview with PITBULL on his PITBULL'S GLOBALIZATION channel, a taping of the "IT'S ME, TINX" podcast, a DJ set with JOHN SUMMIT kicking off his new monthly show on DIPLO'S REVOLUTION, a "town hall" with BECKY G, and a special MIAMI edition of "SALUTE THE SAMPLE" on LL COOL J's ROCK THE BELLS RADIO.

Even though Caliente and En Vivo are the only two Latin music stations on the satellites, they seem to play similar music.
SiriusXM also already has an online channel called Viva, which may have considerable overlap with the new Hits Uno. Viva is described as "Today's Latin Pop Hits."
