All-Access : WLFP (94.1 The Wolf)/Memphis To Move To 99.7, 'Sunsetting' Hot AC WMC (FM 100)

Staff did a follow up skit and physically moved boxes down a hall.

So, I am betting that it is too much to ask for Audacy to have a wake for FM 100, as they somehow think their listeners will flock to 104 (other than the ones that left with Ron and Karen). Real curious to see what kind of format tweaks are going to take place at WRVR to achieve this movement.

Should have read Radio Insight first:

The format of Country “94.1 The Wolf” WLFP will relocate to 99.7 WMC-FM on Monday, June 12 at 12:00pm. The move of the Country format will follow a six hour farewell show for Hot AC “FM 100” in which current and former staffers will appear.

Been listening to Fm100 today and notice they are advertising Ron and Karen’s show on 104.5. Also have been advertising the Monday morning tribute show which will include former Fm100 DJs such as Ron Karen and Steve. What a terrible decision Audacy is making in getting rid of this historic station. A bigger signal is not going to help the Wolf that already has a decent size signal.

You are right, BigA. They do know how too not make any money. I agree with you ass-essment. Cause Memphis is about to teach Audassy what they can kiss...

Very creative, Tibbs. You don't get enough credit for how creative you are. You might have a view on this because you're actually in the town where Audacy is investing a lot of money, and yet doesn't own any stations. What's your view on that?

That may be. But it appears to be part of an investment they're making in the country format. They had a choice to make between formats, and they made this decision not because of ratings or heritage. What's left? My guess is money.
WLFP is a mirror of WUSY Chattanooga. Cheapest way to go.

According to this article: Radio Industry News, Radio Show Prep, Radio Promotions, Radio Station Data, Podcast News FM 100 will be moved to Audacy's digital platform. I'd guess that it might be a lot of the same music, but probably completely automated and no live staff any more.

I get that Audacy can probably save some money on staff being that the Wolf will be a clone of the Chattanooga Station. I don’t know how Fm100 currently does in Ad sales but as other posters have pointed out I would imagine they do much better than the Wolf. I’ve never worked in radio but I have hard time believing that abandoning a format you have owned for years with little to no competition to replace it with a country format that competes with another heritage station in a market that is predominantly African American is a terrible decision. The Wolfs problem in the Memphis market is not their signal. There are too many country stations on the dial in Memphis. Terrible decision by Audacy all the way around.

I find that interesting for sure. And might I note both iheart and Audacy have great visual real estate space and signs. So they are branding. I think “that” is the take away. Gotta be seen to be seen in Nashville these days. And also, no future need to have visible space on Music (Death) Row.

On a separate comment on Memphis vs Chattanooga - you are absolutely looking at two opposite markets and two different versions of heritage playing similar music. I hate to bring it up, but the best example of taking heritage that had heritage away from a market was WKDF in Nashville. Imagine if WUSY sold to EMF in Chatt and WSKZ KZ-106 went to Country. People would never support the same station on KZ 100 percent. (KZ is Cumulus owned, so this was just a hypothetical comment.) Now, WMC didn’t have the numbers that KZ has, but that was a lackluster programming issue that ebbed and flowed over the years in Memphis. That should have been the powerhouse station in Memphis that was not some form of Urban. Hope that made sense. My head is spinning. Country may see a 5-6 12+ on WMC. That may generate more revenue than what has been recently happening, but it probably won’t be substantially better.
I have not thought this change through, or researched. Interesting the demos that would generally listen to country are actually about the same in both cities - roughly 500,000. I may be wrong as the signal may pull in some rural that was lacking. Hmmm. Too lazy to change what I just said. But, it puts me on the fence.

A station that's been crushing it in Chattanooga for decades. What makes you think a station that sounds like it will fail in Memphis?

Well, WSM tried it about 20 years ago and fell flat. The Wolf is already a lot like WUSY and isn’t doing much. Plus, Chattanooga has always had more country shares than Memphis.
