WHBQ Drops Classic Hits For CHR Q1075; B977 to Change Format

Because 102.7 reaches into the parts of the market that WMC-FM does. 101.9 does not cover all of the market, nor does 107.5. They see and opportunity to make a lot more money with 102.7 as a Hot AC once FM100 goes away than they were with Rock 103. They cloned WMC-FM's library at launch and once the 99.7 change takes place they have established themselves as the place for their listeners to move to.
I agree, Lance, but it's still maddening that Audacy would kill off a 40+ year station for a Country format that will struggle to get a 2 share. iHeart can clone FM100, but it will never BE FM100, and ultimately, it's just another iHeart Hot AC that sounds exactly like 100 others across the country.

Exactly. Cookie cutter or not, if your the only game in town with a big signal...

No, theyve been here before.. IE: Flinn competing against bigger signals. I worked for them in another market, theyre a bit different but smart and they know memphis better than just about anyone in the market

Yeah, and it worked so well for them before... "
they know memphis better than just about anyone in the market" - That's comedy gold right there.

iHeart has 3 of the Top 5 stations in Memphis. FM100 and WRVR are the others. IF they can displace FM 100, that's 4 of the top 5. Never underestimate the ability of IHM to screw it up, but on paper it's the right move.

The station is essentially the same format it was before. Not even a name change or change in lineup. What makes them think it's going to work now? Plus they didn't give anyone warning that they were going to change frequencies for both stations which may cause a decline in ratings for them.

By default. No other signals. 107.5 isn't a factor except in the eastern part of the area.

All the same except for going CHR to Hot AC, replacing iHeart Countdown with Mario Lopez and playing Hot AC version of AT40.

I see they’re still playing classic AT40 this morning. Do they have a contract to play them for a certain period of time? I assume if they had a contract with Rick Dees and the WT40, they could simply flip from the classic 80s version over to the current CHR version of the countdown without penalty.
Looks like what I predicted here is happening. Q107.5 is now playing the current Hot AC version of the Weekly Top 40.

I guess? I mean you have steaming. Elvis Duran is great but I'm sure people want something local.
Fewer and fewer iHeartRadio CHRs (even in bigger markets) are going local in the morning. Even Power 96.1 in Atlanta and Z107.7 St. Louis are running the Jubal Show based out of Seattle.

I found out a couple of days ago that Woody and Jim left 107.5 the River in Nashville, but co-hosts are holding down the fort. I wonder how long before iHeart ditches it for Jubal, Elvis Duran, or some other syndicated morning show.

Rick Dees’ Weekly Top 40? That’s still on the air?
Yes. He’s 73 now. Curious as to when he will retire. FM100 was playing the same thing Sunday mornings prior to WHBQ’s flip to classic hits. Then WHBQ played the 80s version. Dees is not in very many markets these days. Since his site doesn’t post where he is played, I gather he is on more classic hits stations these days versus CHR/Hot AC stations.

Casey Kasem hosted American Top 40 until he was in his early 70s. Also, Bob Kingsley hosted Country Top 40 until he was 80. In fact, he hosted until a week before he died.
Sadly, Casey's voice got very elderly-sounding toward the end of his hosting of AT40 and AT20, while his older 70s and 80s reruns, with the youthful-sounding Casey, were also running

I still have a recording of AT40 from then WKSL 107.5 Kiss FM on 3/18/2001. Yes he sounds a lot older. And it’s very strange to hear him introduce some of the newer artists of that time. It’s funny how now 102.7 Kiss FM is using the same jingle 107.5 Kiss FM used 25 years ago. Same jingle 102.7 KIIS FM LA used for a long time. Also have recording of Rick Dees from later that same evening on FM100. Dees introduces the WT40 on FM100. I’ll keep this treasure now that FM100 is going away on Monday.
