All-Access : WLFP (94.1 The Wolf)/Memphis To Move To 99.7, 'Sunsetting' Hot AC WMC (FM 100)

That's a lot. I might still enjoy it. Having little interest in Memphis radio specifically, I probably won't get much out of such a long recording. But the big switch is something I'd like to hear.
I have just uploaded a video of 30 minutes worth of the last few moments, and the first few moments of "the wolf", with timestamps in description to click on so you can see the big moment.

That was good.

I've heard musicians saying hello to listeners on 105.7 Man Up, an iHeart mainstream rock station where I live. I may have heard country musicians do the same thing.

Oops. Typo.

Thanks for the posts of the final minutes. I tried to record it but haven't been able to check it yet, and it probably won't be any better than what was already posted here.

I found out that FM 100 is still running as a channel on Audacy's app, but I'm guessing that it's all automated with no live announcers. Is this on an HD channel as well?

That is exactly what is going on..I mean at least the brands still alive but it kinda stinks regardless that its reduced to just being a playlist basically.

I'm too far into the Jackson market to get any HD signals so I cannot confirm...It'd be nice, though

10+ years ago the play was to kill a format and move it to HD2. That hasn't been happening from what I understand because the cost doesn't justify the licensing fees.

Audacy seems to have HD on life support in most markets, Mostly only HD1 and AM simulcasts.

They did it for Country and Alternative in New York City. Those streams are still running on HD2 and the Audacy app. If it manages to attract some interest/goodwill, there's no reason to assume that they won't do the same for FM100 in Memphis.

New York is also New York City, #1 Media market. Memphis is #51.

WLFP got most of the top current stars to record their "Hey y'all"s. Morgan Wallen, Luke Combs, Carrie Underwood, Jelly Roll. I'm impressed. Our local small-market Wolf is still running greetings from Brett Eldredge, The Band Perry (no longer together), and Florida Georgia Line (ditto). Will someone please tell them it's not 2015 anymore?

I heard Casey Kasem in there around 1 minute. Wow! I keep struggling to hear him call FM100 out on the classic AT40’s I hear online. I know they’re in there somewhere. I have an air check with Rick Dees from 3/18/2001 where he says “the Weekly Top 40 Countdown on WMC-FM Memphis. FM100!” The first ad was during the transition to Hot AC in the early 90s.

He usually just said "WMC-FM, Memphis, TN," or something similar. He didn't really start using station nicknames until the '80s.

"Did you hear FM 100 is going away?"
"Yeah, isn't that terrible?"
"Yeah, it's a tragedy. When was the last time you listened to it?"
"I don't know. Maybe 15 or 20 years ago."
In fairness, most of us aged out of FM 100 at some point, anyway. For me, it was about 30 years ago. We listened in a bit on Sunday night in preparation for Monday morning, and I heard exactly TWO songs that I was familiar with, both "older" songs, one by Kelly Clarkson, and the other by Bruno Mars.

During the sendoff yesterday (Monday) there were callers who said that they had been listening for 40 years! I don't see how! The music has changed so much over that time that if you had been listening for that long, then your tastes had likely also changed!

So we switched to listening to WRVR on Sunday night after too many unfamiliar songs on FM 100, and we were familiar with roughly every other song on 'RVR. A much more pleasant listening experience for us.

I could barely get 94.9 and it was still K-LOVE so I take it that 94.1 became became Air 1?
I was only able to record 94.1s stream, i think it's just simulcasting 99.7 right now.

I sometimes can get 94.1 if conditions are right but usually WTJF-FM overpowers it.

UPDATE: Just checked at 8:38 AM today, barely can get it but yes it indeed is just simulcasting 99.7...assuming just until they can finish the sale to EMF...

FM 100 did a good job, at least for awhile, of aging with its audience. It also seemed to do a good job of replacing the audience that aged out with new listeners. It wasn't one of those heritage stations that did nothing while watching its audience erode until it slipped into irrelevance and went away. People in Dallas were upset when KTXQ "Q102" went away, and people in Kansas City were upset when KYYS went away (twice). In both of those cases, the audience was mostly gone by the time they left the air. The people who were upset the heritage stations were gone had long since stopped listening themselves. They, in my opinion, had little to complain about. The situation with FM 100 was different.

These days, WRVR is a better listening experience for me, too. When I set the alarm to The River in college, it was generally a case of turning it off as soon as it came on. If it hadn't gone away two or three years earlier, I probably would've set the alarm to WEZI, at least until I slept through the elevator music and missed my first class. I definitely thought The River was a boring station, but it did the job of waking me up so I could do everything I needed to do to get out the door and make that 9:00 class. I think it actually started a few minutes after 9:00, but I can barely remember my schedule today let alone 30 years ago. In college, I always preferred rock to pop, but Memphis only had WEGR for rock at the time. 95.7 hadn't signed on quite yet. I think it was on-air right before the semester over, but I can't remember it ever playing music. Oldies 98.1 played at least some classic rock. So, I'd usually check it out and see what was on before I went to FM 100. I think the longest time I spent listening to FM 100 was when midterms were done, and some of my friends and I celebrated by shooting pool in the dorm with a boombox tuned to FM 100. We didn't realize we'd been playing all night until some of our girlfriends showed up on the way to breakfast and asked when we got down there. Somehow, I still did alright that semester. My grades didn't start going down until I was a junior and had transferred to another school!
