KKGO 105.1 Hd3

I noticed the Taylor Swift yesterday. Sorry to see Unforgettable go but I am quite used to Levine and his changing formats after all these years!

FYI Taylor is in Santa Clara tonight and tomorrow.

Then she has a week of shows at Sofi Stadium next week. All of this is because of her tour.

How dumb to do this promotion on an HD-3 station that the overwhelming majority of KKGO's audience at any given time has either (a) no ability to tune in or (b) if listening from a car that happens to have HD radio, no understanding how to tune in.

It is being totally wasted on the HD3.

Station Manager Michael Levine notes in the RadioInsight article that the all-Swift format is “temporary programming until we announce another format”.

No, it's actually shrewd. He's using Taylor's concert tour as stunting, hoping (and seemingly succeeding) to get some free publicity for a subchannel that has, maybe, dozens of listeners on a good day. Then he switches formats as intended anyway, but by then more listeners are paying attention. Except for some extra programming costs and music licensing fees, it's a free ride to a format change.

It should be noted that for those interested, unlike HD-1, HD-2, and, HD-4. the 105.1 HD-3 channel has always been MONO regardless of the format. Just checked with headphones and Taylor Swift "channel" is indeed mono. Country, Classical, and Oldies still in Stereo.

So maybe the "dozens of listeners on a good day" increases to a couple thousand on a very short-term basis, who will then most likely instantly leave the moment this temporary programming disappears.

Please explain to me how that is monetizable.

Even with music licensing there is not going to be a difference as the Author/Composer fees are not based on songs but on percentages of revenue and a few other considerations.

Not everything is necessarily monetizable. Michael Levine has known Taylor since she was a teenager. This is his way of having fun.
For those that don't understand, the FM's analog/HD1 format is and was country and they played "So Mean" and all the other Taylor Swift tunes.

And if I understand you correctly, my response is, 10% of zero is zero. 100% of zero is zero, and 1000% of zero is still zero. Does their HD3 bring in anything above zero?

Does not matter for music licensing as there are base fees base on, depending on the service, coverage are, power, etc.

Does it have to? Has it ever?

We have been through this so many times. If the owner's intent is to have a toy with which to play and not to make money, then he can do whatever he wants, play whatever he wants, and change it up whenever he wants, and, guess what, money is no object. The number of listeners are of little or no concern as well.

Meet Mr. Saul Levine, who, unlike mega-corporate owned "Jack", really does play what he wants. He is the last man in town that does.
