Y'All not listening

Well the July ratings show Y'all 106.7 at a 1.4 same as last month. This was the first full month of the Classic Country format.I dont see this station catching on in any way.

Nashville is oversaturated with country stations. The money has to be getting pretty thin and not enough to go around with so much competition for advertiser dollars.
I still cannot figure out why WKDF is still country when they have an in house sister station. But I’m sure some bean counter someplace thinks it makes sense.

More likely is that research and local management along with corporate consent think there are more dollars in that option than anything else.

Both average around a 4 share and both are Top 10 billers in the market.

One of the most flip-happy frequencies in Nashville!
Right. 9x since '99. But it has some company. 102.5 has flipped formats 6x since '05. 1430 10x since '77. 97.1 8x since '05. 104.5 11x since '71. 1370 Ft. Campbell 7 times since 86. 1590 Springfield 4x since '02. 92.1 7x since '78. 1240 9x since 1970. 103.3 8x since '68. (P.S. And, at one point, i was in danger of being booted off the board since i never worked in radio- i have personally known 4 people who did. But i've kept up with format changes, etc since 1970. I'd guess i'm in the top 20-30% on that!)

The 12+ numbers may help explain why the change was made. Keep any stations/formats within range of beating your stations at bay. WNFN could smartly affect the numbers on country. Not going to be easy at all. WNFN may eventually steal a point or two from (each) WSM, WSIX and even KDF. I think it needs six months and a tweak toward the 80s to get those numbers. Maybe skew up a bit in age. I can’t see the station getting above a 4-4.8 as it stands. They’d really have to tighten it up and get it right beyond right to see a 5.0. Signal is finally optimized, so you do have that.

The interesting thing would be to see IF Cumulus would say, really? You want a piece of our two station territory? Ok. We have a male-driven set of formats and we are lacking dominating the market with Classic Rock / leaning Southern (aka old KDF). So now you have WSM-FM, WTN, The Zone, 92-Q and a rock station? That allows for some hefty marketing and revenues. And, done right could take some thunder from Jack. Oh well, why think anything that would require work? BigA. Some of that is for you. I am
ALWAYS pushing the return of KDF in honor of you.

Pretty impressive stats! I don’t think there is another soul that would have that data. I am going to challenge myself to seeing how many of all of those changes that i recall. What are the three to five best stations/formats you liked over the years? Jim - you can’t you play if you say jazz. :)

That's because you're such a Rupert Holmes fan!

I agree with your first sentence. Look at the Top 2 stations in the 12+. Both Midwest stations. Mission accomplished.

The ONLY station that lost listeners in this book was WKDF. Do you think the modern country station lost listeners because of a new classic country station? I don't think so.

The only way 106.7 gets any ratings is if they hire Gerry House & the House Party reunion. You heard it here first.

I drove through Nashville a couple weekends ago and liked what Yall was offering.

This could be one of those flanker station situations, where Midwest is trying to shave a couple points off WSM-FM and WSIX, and take revenue away from Cumulus/iHeart with the market-leading Mix and Jack.

I suddenly feel so important! WKDA-am through the format change in '70. KDF. WRLT. 99.7 at the beginning. The Planet. Listening to the Denver Jack at work. (I can hear the snoring, so to wrap) Finally: the Alts. Shame on you, iHeart...

Radio Nashville = You lost your street cred with BigA by liking KDF. What was it that you originally liked about 99.7? Dave Ramsey AND Roy Matlock, Plaster were on, etc? I definitely think it is amazing that The Planet is still liked and respected for such a short-lived station on a small signal at the beginning. Nice list.

BigA - you know me alllll to well. Rupert will NEVER leave the airwaves in Nashville if I have my way. :)

RE: KDF - I agree with you this time, even IF you happen to be wrong, about KDF sometimes. I think it's just the weirdest curse that they can get a little lift for a book or two and then it drops. I'm open to the idea of House on Y'all. I think the plan would be to break the two way fight for 8's and 9's on WSIX or WSM and I doubt Barbara and the gang even considered KDF being affected.
Interesting to see The River make the rebound. I do wonder what the numbers would be if Woody and Jim were still there.

KDF: This will cause Big A to put a hit out on me: I actually listened to it THRU THE ALTERNATIVE demise. No excuse for that.
99.7 Everything: Teddy Bart, Matlock & Ramsey & someone else on Fri. Mid-day show taking a song and either tracing its roots, or songs with a theme... with-and for this i should be banned from the board- I never can remember who, but he's pretty well-known.
The Planet. I'm 69. Favorite station of my friend a year younger and his son!
What i currently listen most to: (1) S/XM Deep Tracks (2) 106.7 (no joke); and (3) 93.3.
So has my tenuous hold on RD membership improved or deteriorated?

The format probably needs some time to mature. Having talked with a number of people (and I do talk to a lot of people), nobody even knows that WNFN flipped or that the station even exists even though the station has been on the air since the 1990s (I did hear in the very early 90s but it was forced to move because of its close proximity to the airport).
The audio is of pretty good quality, at least on the car radio but they really do need to tweak the processor.

I believe it will catch on given a little more time. I hesitate in saying anything that could be taken negatively, but to me when I listen to 106.7 it does not sound like a Midwest Station. Midwest is a great Broadcaster, but this station is lacking personality. Not lacking personalities-personality. I believe if it were imaged with a modern presentation/sound that was relevant and matched to the era of music it is playing it would catch on much quicker. It sounds like a playlist and that is an immediate turn off to anyone on these threads but believe it or not the presentation is much more important to listeners than we give them credit. The station does not take you back theatrically to the 80's and 90's. It sounds like a playlist which anyone can get on their phone. (blah blah blah). I also feel like it does not have a strong brand. When I hear "Ya'll", I think of South as in Texas-not Tennessee. I give them credit for trying to think outside the box, making a very bold move and having wonderful products and stations but we all "miss it" sometimes and I tend to think they missed the mark and need to make some tweaks. Again, Midwest is a wonderful Broadcaster and I mean nothing ill to them or whomever programmed it. I wish them much success!

Y'all at a sterling 1.2. How low would they have to go to flip again? Do they give it a couple years...?
The latest ratings came out today for Knoxville and WDKW has a 3.8. That's the higest I recall 95.7 ever getting. Can somebody remeber what it was getting as Jack FM and Oldies?

Ironically-over in Knoxville, their Duke FM product seemed to do well not too long ago. I believe it will pick up after they make a few modifications and it will end up being strong. We'll see, huh? Wishing them nothing but the best. Their success is OUR success!
