Kiss 107

This is like in the mid-'90s when Q-102 went through a phase where they kept saying, "The station you grew up with has grown up with you." Kiss 107 is about at that stage in its life.

I guess we no longer have a CHR that isn't gold-based. But since current music is so bad now, why would we want one?

For a good amount of the 00s, San Francisco lacked a mainstream CHR. Now, they are maintaining two.

As for WKFS, they do have some oddball picks for 00s music (Take You There, Just a Friend 2002, Hey Ma, etc). But perhaps they have historically tested extremely well for WKFS compared to everywhere else.

Yeah It's been country for at least 15 years now when they dropped alternative rock a few years after Stern went to Sirius back when CBS owned them. I don't know if Hubbard would flip it since they own Q102 which is hot AC these days and is pretty successful

I’m not a CHR fan at my age. But this does reinforce my respect for WKRQ, which, like ‘em or not, has survived challenges from many competitors since their 1972 change from WKRC-FM to the “Super Q.” They’ve made adjustments based on trends in the music industry and the local market, all the while remaining very Cincinnati-centric. They’ve not farmed out their morning shows to out-of-town jocks, they’ve not strayed too far from their CHR roots despite leaning Hot AC at times and a brief AORish period in 1974-75, and they’ve not given in to the temptation to flip to the latest trendy format during periodic ratings lulls. Props to current ownership Hubbard for staying the course with this legendary Top 40/CHR station of over 50 years.

To my ears, Kiss 107 has done a fantastic job with their gold based approach. Their music genuinely resembles the sound they had in their heyday, albeit slightly less rhythmic. Taste is subjective but in my opinion they've done a better job at this than the other high profile station, B96

That's because the CHR music these days is so bad. What sort of currents are CHR stations today supposed to play anyway? The currents now are horrible.
I agree so much. I stopped listening to CHR about 6 - 7 years ago. I’m now firmly in the classic hits demo.

When Kiss first came, I thought “Wow! Cincinnati finally has an energetic sounding Top 40 station like you find in most other major cities.” I always hated Q 102.
I liked Q-102 up until about 1984. I started listening to them a lot less because of their "instant replay" nonsense around 1984-85.

Are you talking about when Mark Sebastian played “Everybody Wants You” over and over again, or is this something else?

This was when they took a song they played all the time anyway and played it twice back to back. I remember them doing this with "Some Guys Have All The Luck" and maybe "I Feel For You."

I actually don’t remember this. I must have been listening to WCLU or WLAP.

That works with a small number of people that like the song, but the problem is when you just think the song is OK or don’t like the song. Yeah, not a good move.

The overplay of “Everybody Wants You” was rather juvenile. Billy Squier was a huge narcissist. It finally caught up with him when the “Rock Me Tonite” video came out.
