Suns, Mercury to KTVK/KPHE

Noticing that Gray is spending money. Wasn't it some chatter that Gray was going to strip-mine their stations to the bare minimums.

That was the original though, I believe. It seems that they are willing to spend $$$ on sports. And they are continuing to hire news people as well (I'm sure that the 8th weather person will be along soon for weekend GMAZ).

We haven't directly discussed this, but Gray re-opening the Flagstaff bureau and starting a Yuma bureau is, well, news.

Well, I was just on the App and they did a Friday Field Trip to Yuma, introduced the new Yuma reporter, and Gibby (who is originally from Yuma) was MC'ing a block party on Saturday. They even announced that GMAZ is back on the air in Yuma.

Couldn't the stations not owned by Gray in Tucson and Yuma sue to have GMAZ blocked in their markets, because that would be unfair competition to their morning shows? I would think that it's not a good idea for Gray to air GMAZ on any of their stations other than Phoenix and Flagstaff.

Syndex doesn't apply to things that aren't traditional syndicated programs. That includes local news.

If you look at the AZFS lineup minus newscasts, other local programming, and live sports coverage, it consists nearly entirely of programs to which Gray owns the rights: PowerNation, Origin Sports, the KTVK Extra Point podcast. GameTime with Boomer Esiason? Gray bought the production company last year and its archives of sports interviews. (And I bet whatever station airs it in Yuma is going to or has lost it.) The Fantasy GOAT? Produced by KVVU in Las Vegas, where it airs on their similar sports sub.

This is by design. It means that the channel does not contain programming that would be syndex'd. It's also cheap; the programming is already being produced for various platforms. About the only thing that makes me wonder is World Poker Tour.

In Tucson, Gray could easily paper over most of the KTVK newscasts with KOLD output (the only weekday hours I see without Tucson news are 9:30am, 12:30pm, and 8pm).

I would be curious to see in the Yuma market what this does to the NPG news monopoly, though of course a newscast from Phoenix does little good if you live in El Centro. For reference, their total news output is:
  • 6–7am on ABC and NBC (Sunrise)
  • 7–8am on Fox (Sunrise)
  • 4pm on CBS ("13 On Your Side at 4")
  • 5–5:30pm on ABC and NBC (Early Edition)
  • 6–6:30pm on NBC
  • 6–7pm on CBS ("13 On Your Side at 6")
  • 9–9:30pm on Fox (Nightside)
  • 10–10:35 on ABC and NBC (Nightside)
  • 10–10:35 on CBS ("13 On Your Side at 10")
  • Plus 5 and 10pm on Telemundo, probably recorded
They seem to put a little effort into varying the presentation of the NBC/ABC and CBS newscasts. They use separate theme music, separate but related graphics, and even weather branding (Weather Authority vs. First Alert Weather). Actually, if there's any beef to be had, that might be it—that's a Gray trademark that they have moved to using in every market they are in.

As for "First Alert Weather", some non-Gray stations have used that branding for years. KING 5 in Seattle is one of them.

Actually, KVOA has an hour-long midday newscast from 12-1pm.

So just out of curiosity I decided to check if the Suns game tonight has Spanish audio on the 2nd Audio Channel since they have a Spanish Radio broadcast and sure enough they do, but only on KTVK 3TV as KPHE 44 Arizona's Family Sports does not have a 2nd Audio Channel.

Unless your affiliated with a major network like CBS, YouTube not really hates MLB but also regional NBA and NHL games.
YTTV pulled both 3 and 61. KTVK is gone completely, while KASW was replaced with the national CW feed. I doubt it's because they hate local sports, since the GCU basketball games that air on KUTP/45 are not blacked out. Gray and Scripps probably wanted more money, and YouTube said No.

Consider that the "Coalition For Local News" demands change since the FCC don't regulate cable and streaming content right now. The parent companies of the broadcast networks bundle their own stations & cable networks with their affiliates in the streaming provider negotiations than having cable, satelitte, and telcos negotiate with the station groups separate from the network owners that bundle their own stations with their cable channels.

This is a central issue as vMVPDs gain traction.

Should they be subject to the retrans consent/must-carry regime like traditional providers, which might also raise their rates?

Or should they be allowed to do what they do now, which is negotiate with the networks directly for all of their affiliates and then with station group owners for additional independents etc.?
