Radio Libre Flipping Soon?

They just played "Sé Me Fue" by El Gran Combo de Puerto Rico and played a promo saying they've dropped their conservative format for now and to enjoy "Musica Libre en Radio Libre 790". Looks like WAXY might flip completely soon since Americano Media will be shutting down unless a miracle happens to them.

Now they're playing "A Dios Le Pido" by Juanes... looks like Spanish Oldies isn't returning to Miami like I hoped.

That's a huge story, especially in Miami, where there is so much competition in the Hispanic talk format.

Yikes. Maybe Audacy could try hiring former employees from Radio Mambí? But we all know that Audacy has their own problems right now..

Exactly. Audacy made this deal because it cost them no money. Now that Americano is in trouble, they'll likely do something cheap. I'd say sports betting, although that's controversial in Florida.

This story has been brewing since mid-August, and several media outlets, including the Miami Herald, have been reporting on it.

Americano Media isn’t the only entity being stiffed by Voz Media. Voz also had a $64M deal to purchase the TV assets of SBS, which it failed to close, and SBS called off the sale. SBS apparently needed that money to pay down debt, as well as complete its purchase of KROI in Houston.

A complete mess for several companies.

We thought Audacy might give up on Spanish radio when Americano went away. Apparently not:

They're opening the checkbook and hiring well known local talent as an attempt to compete with Mambi:

Former Americano Media and “Radio Mambi” WAQI Miami (710) host Lourdes Ubieta will anchor “En Este País con Lourdes Ubieta,” from 11am-2pm, which features current affairs, analysis, and interviews. Another former Americano Media personality, Jorge Bonilla, will host “El Show de Jorge Bonilla,” from 3-6pm.

They're opening the checkbook and hiring well known local talent as an attempt to compete with Mambi:
Mambi does not have to be competed with. It was pretty much destroyed by the announcement that a Soros-backed group would be buying it. To the staff that had kept WAQI in the 2.5 to 3.0 share level in the last several years, that was like saying that the devil was on his way, and everyone of value left already.

Then again, you're the one who says Hispanics don't listen to AM.
The exception is among old Cubans in Miami. Anywhere else, if there is FM in Spanish, the AMs die.

The median age of WAQI listeners in 2019 was over 65. It made money because many of those older Cuban refugee listeners were also the business owners of Cuban Miami. Remember, Miami is the only US market where Hispanic household income is greater than that of non-Hispanic whites... and most local business is Hispanic owned.

Non-Hispanic whites are only 22% of the Metro. And most of them are in northern Broward.

one word: yippee

If that's the audience Audacy wants with Radio Libre, good luck.
They're still probably gonna get decent ratings. As David said, WAQI was ruined with the announcement of LMN buying the station, and from what I see, WAXY is gonna be one of the stations benefitting from that. All they need is a morning show.

As far as I know, the new ownership hasn't done a single thing to any of the stations they owned. Sounds like Chicken Little mentality. If WAXY gets a bunch of over-65 Cubans, good luck.
What I'm saying is, it was ruined in the eyes of the listeners. A company supported by Soros is not a good look in the eyes of 65+ Cubans apparently and I can see why.

I doubt that LMN is aiming at 65+ Cubans at all. But my sense is they'll leave Mambi alone and focus on their other AM in Miami.

They already said that they are going to make Mambí more balanced, which is why most of the staff left. LMN is run by two former Democratic Party operatives and they are not going to keep Mambí so rigidly to the far, far, right.

The new owners did do something: they said they were going to make the station more "balanced" and the result is that all the high-rated talk hosts left. The station was castrated and it is not getting much listening now.

You said the audience before was 65+. Perhaps some passed away.

It is still doing better than the others. The previous hosts went to Americano, and had fewer listeners.

And there has been no change in the "balance" at Mambi.

The audience went into a gradual decline when Pérez Roura, the PD/News Director/Show Host died three years ago. But the greatest decline has been since the sale was announce, causing several of the most respected hosts to leave. After that, the decline was considerable and pretty immediate.

Unless you have lived in the Cuban exile community you would not understand the depth and strength of the hatred for the communist regime in Cuba. I got the first "award of honor" of the Association of Cuban Journalists in Exile so I know them well; I even helped in the Mariel boat-lift and used to belong to several of the local Cuban exile groups.

Yes, some pass away every year. But there are hundreds of thousands who left Cuba in the first decades of after the revolution and those are the ones who support the cause.

The others dispersed to several other different stations, not just one. 670, 790, 1040 took most of them but one even went to 1260.
And there has been no change in the "balance" at Mambi.
Yes, there has. I have listened. As the former AM manager of all the HBC now TelevisaUniivision) stations, I used to supervise it and I can tell the huge differences. This used to be a station with 5 and 6 shares under Pérez Roura so being in the mid-1's is not "no change"; it's now a Univision outlet and much of the audience is not Cuban.
