Christmas Music

I don't think any other market in the Top 100 is missing a secular All-Christmas station. Some markets have two (Seattle, Cleveland, Tampa, Charlotte, Columbus, Pittsburgh, Kansas City, Portland OR) and a few even have three (Milwaukee, Albany).

And yet, when WSTR tried it a few years ago, it really didn't help much in the ratings.
Nothing in the Atlanta market is normal or like any other top market. It’s an animal of its own where all of the traditional rules are thrown out.

Audacy airs Delilah on a number of stations, I know they do in Boston and Philadelphia.

Didn't B have Delilah for a time after Peach/Lite flipped to country?
 
I wonder how poorly Power will fall until iHeart even considers to make a format change.
Even if nationally CHR is having issues the format still has lots of agency attraction due to its attractive demos. 96.1 most likely has positive cash flow. I doubt there is a hole in Hip Hop market.
 
While we're on the subject, Star94 is rolling an all Christmas weekend as we speak. I don't listen to them too much on weekends. But I'm assuming they've been playing all Christmas since Friday, and should go back to normal by Monday morning. Scared me though... Until I heard a sweeper, I was thinking a flip was coming. 😆

I remember a radio station in San Diego that went all-Christmas on the weekends starting after Thanksgiving. They stayed all-Christmas on the last weekend through Christmas Day. Now, they’re on the all-Christmas bandwagon.
 
Interesting why a station in Atlanta (with the exception of the Fish) won’t go 24/7 Christmas.
Two general theories I have heard in the past on this site:

#1 There are few "market covering" FMs for a market with this size population that is also is a poster child for "unban sprawl" so there is little financial reason for the big "inside the perimeter" stations to do it.

#2 There is the augment that Atlanta stations are afraid of losing their 11 month P1 audience which seems to be the opposite of #1

And my personal belief is the agencies control most of the ad money in the market and their clients will not support "one month" departure from their marketing plan.

@secondchoice, if I remember correctly, the last two years B98.5 went all Christmas they had huge ratings for the Christmas, but the ratings did not come back to normal in January. The last year they did all Christmas, there was a significant drop in January. So, if memory serves, B98.5 decided the gain in December was not worth having to work so hard to get their normal audience back.

I had heard that too, which kinda surprises me because they don't have to deal with a "pure" AC in the market. 94.1is a gold rhythmic and the two CHRs which my best guess could pick up 98.5's disgruntled listeners as a P2. But IMHO the current CHR music might not hold +25 females very long.

When B was more of a traditional AC and going all-Christmas I bet they lost fewer listeners in January. Their primary competition (principally Peach/Lite) also played a lot of Christmas music and went full-Christmas at times as well.

Now that they're competing with Star and Q and Power 96 with a more currents-based Hot AC format (despite their ongoing claim* of playing the "80s, 90s, and now", with "now" now comprising over two decades), a gold-based Christmas format doesn't fit their format or their target listenership as well. If B went all-Christmas these days, it would definitely affect Q100 in a positive way.

*Of course Cox sister River was "NEW" long after they were actually new by any definition.

B98.5 does play Christmas music. A lot of it is traditional songs by more recent artists mixed in with the truly traditional stuff.

They just don't play only Christmas music. It's been several years, but I saw Chris Eagan quoted as saying the reason is too much of the audience didn't return in January. If another AC were playing 100% Christmas music, B98.5 would be forced to do the same.

But since the demise of Peach/Lite, there's not another AC. Star doesn't count.
