102.7 KTFM "Wild 102.7" takeover in 2001

Does anyone remember anything about this apparent "takeover" at KTFM in mid 2001? This is behind a paywall, but is the only relevant result from Google. The title says the police were attracted to the station.

I remmeber pretty much only those 2 guys on-air playing nothing but hip-hop remixes, they seemed to really like this song.
They renamed it to "Wild 102.7". They stated "We have completely taken over this radio station." I find it hard to believe that they really did...
KTFM's owners wouldn't have let that happen. I'd imagine someone would turn off the transmiter or something if 2 randoms stole their station.

The two only had the station by themselves for a short while however; advertisers apparently were running away according to the small piece of the article I was able to read. Two months later it had returned to "KTFM", but the DJs stayed on for a bit, the two had an evening show known as "The Budman and Booger Show" with other guests coming in a lot.
LOL if that was a stunt, it was a good one. I listened to KTFM a lot then, it became my favorite station for a while. And then they pulled the plug a year or two later. Now it's just a robot named Jack haha.

Federal Agents would have been involved in such an instance. The people who did this would be in prison convicted on Federal charges. A station owner's responsibility is to maintain control of their station/license. There is as much truth to this as the person who says the moon is made of cheese,

I figured. Go look at Google's cache of the article in search results. It's readable that way. ;)

Were these people ever caught?

I remember this and them playing “Wild Thing” on repeat over and over again. It was a pretty big story back then, I even remember several news stations covering this stunt.

In 2001, KTFM was still the heritage CHR in the market, as you may also recall. I remember the fervor attached to this "takeover". I also remember the excitement within the market when 102.7 initialized the country stunt, leading to an actual format flip for sister 94.1, and various speculations from people stating that KTFM was returning home to 102.7. In both instances, it was a form of stunting, and done so in hopes of garnering some much needed attention to a fledgling format. It worked, and in the case of instance referenced by the OP, it made such an impression on him, that we are now talking about it again, some 22 years after the stunt.

I didn't even know it was a stunt back then. Haha now I know more about how radio works it makes more sense.
I heard somewhere a bit before the event that "Drex was quitting and they were changing the format". Plans changed.

I remember this too. 98.5 The Beat basically came in and ate their lunch so they had to make a change and pulled this stunt eventually. When they did change the format, I’m not gonna lie. It was actually pretty dope with nothing but a bunch of hip hop mixes most of the time. I remember the whole budman and booger or whatever they called themselves. Also had a girl on that moved here from Las Vegas I think?? What’s crazy is that fall, 911 happened and I remember they got all serious during the time (as they should’ve). They actually kinda covered and kept us in the loop too about everything going on if I remember compared to a lot of the other fm stations. Man, talk about memory with all this!

I do remember 9/11, they had people on-air all day taking calls and offering support.
I think they had already switched back to "KTFM" from "Wild" maybe, but Budman and Booger were on evenings and lasted at least the rest of that fall.

Yup. The wild was dropped not even a year later and they went back to a top 40 type of format. Until KROCK happened which shocked the radio airwaves in 2003??

I miss krock, I used to love their imaging spots, they were just kinda humorous to me

I remembered 102.7 was "Wild" around the same time then-KRBV (now KJKK) 100.3 in Dallas. They, too, did the mixshows that started off with "Wild Thing" by Tone Loc. It was said to be a Rhythmic CHR station but, like KTFM, went mainstream instead and was basically a Kiss FM clone (as in whatever song Kiss played, Wild played it right after minutes later, of course I'm talking about Dallas, not San Antonio).

KTFM went back to using their calls in their name again the following year as I remembered then the year after that went to K-Rock. Meanwhile, Wild in Dallas finally caved in 2004 when Jack FM launched and has been Jack since. Ironically, Jack came to SA the year after. It's like 100.3 Dallas and 102.7 San Antonio were like twins (except 100.3 is now owned by Audacy and 102.7 is owned by Alpha, who also has stations on the Audacy app).
