KEXP Buys KREV

I pulled it in yesterday from my car radio, down near the Port of Redwood City. The signal sounded stronger than it has for some time.
And the change to Sutro already made the station clear & strong when it was previously completely unlistenable - I haven’t personally noticed as much from the power increase on its own, though around the 101 corridor like you’re mentioning it helped. You can get KREV all the way along 101 till just past Mountain View, and before the move it would die out around the port of Redwood City. And that was before the power increase I was testing the signal.

Unfortunately, along 280 you still pick up another station… I can not tell what it is and KTOM over it, sometimes to the point those stations come in flawlessly. I’m not sure what other 92.7 could be interfering if someone knows? It certainly isn’t the one from San Jose. I can check that pretty easily with streaming and confirmed it wasn’t. Multi pathing is REALLY REALLY bad along 280, until you get past 92. Which leaves a lot of local area that’s an issue.

I do look forward to seeing how the new antenna and HD implementation affect that, but I imagine that’ll mostly just help eliminate ”FM static” as it is called in HD Radio’s advertising.

Wasn't the move a 'power reduction'? They picked up height.

Dave clarified it, he’s got it.

Basically they went from a low height high rise rooftop antenna location to Sutro, doing so reduced power, there was an issue so they were not operating at their intended power.

The major change for us in the peninsula was the height - the bay terrain makes radio really challenging but height seems to hold more capability here then power.

Aside from that, 92.7 fights a lot of other signals. I was somehow pulling 92.7 KBQB (i pulled off the side of the road for 10 minutes before I heard the station name) in central San Mateo county.

Thanks, I was hoping to have someone clarify the earlier comment about a 'power increase'.

Ah, the initial move went wrong and they filed a temporary permit (SP, I believe?) to operate at a reduced power which was rectified today.
KEXP borrowed an antenna to meet the 12-31 deadline and it was sending back a lot of reflected power. We didn't know how long that condition would last, hence the filing. The new antenna was still being designed. But we were able to repurpose one of the antennas from Bay View Park and get to full power after all. New antenna should go up (w/ HD) late Feb. Little bit of a fire drill but we got there.

Thank you so much for the transparency!! Breathe of fresh air

I agree with Radiopaw, Jamie. Appreciate your transparency. And just to supplement my earlier info, I've tried pulling in 92.7 from my location near I-280. I can't detect any signal, much less a clean one, on any of three radios here. (And yet I am able to get a somewhat clean signal from "Froggy" 92.9 in Santa Rosa, and from KFBK 93.1 in Sacramento. I tested on two stereo tuners, one analog and the other digital tuning, and with a GE Superadio. Not to mention 92.3/KSJO in San Jose [on virtually any radio in the house], though that's to be expected up here.)

I-280 is my “stomping grounds” for car radio, and it is a really rough corridor for a lot of radio from SF, signal strength drops to levels you can’t find until you go another 50 miles away from RWC/Palo Alto. I highly doubt they could do anything about that. Between 92 and Palo Alto you won’t get 92.7 at all on 280 without receiving KTOM and somehow, a tiny bit of KBQB, which is a shame as it is a major highway. Unless they’d be allowed to get on KCSM’s tower with a signal repeater, which probably is entirely unworth the cost of operation for how little that would serve, unless they feel that “trendy suburb” commuters in the nearby SF peninsula are a major source of their donations and listeners.

I don’t even think HD will assist with that gap - what HD will do is probably eliminate KTOM and extend the “static free listening” to Palo Alto.

Also, I was testing 92.7 today and I noticed a lot higher quality — in fact, it was flawless between 280 and 101 on Woodside Rd. For the first time ever in my 9 years of having my own car.

Anecdotal experience, but still… I’m always messing with my dial, I just love radio too much haha.

1/25 (Yesterday) — 92.7 was cutting out fully on 101 near 380 and SFO, though. For anyone not familiar with the bay, that’s about 10-15m from the antenna. I’m curious if that was a result of the recent antenna shuffle, but it was also a poor weather day.

Just curious because I just noticed your avatar. Are you a Furry?

I am, though I didn’t really wanna make it too public for a while. People don’t entirely understand the culture and while the community is growing these days, I decided since there’s a few others in the forum to just be myself - but I’m not using my own character here just because I am more open about my location and life here, and the internet these days is crazy

Also, the f doesn’t have to be capitalized, but you’re free to do what you wish haha.

92.3 KSJO has some amazing signal, same for 105.7 KVVF, those stations persist all the way to the city (SF) quite well from my experience.

Understood, thanks. There is another regular contributor on this site who has a similar avatar of a different character. Raccoon, I believe. That's why I speculated your name/handle and similar avatar as a clue.

Which was why Cumulus felt it was worth the money to LMA it when they were doing their Nash Country thing.

Absolutely - and if it wasn’t such a “recent” thing, it might have been outright owned by them still as a signal. Unfortunately as much as I dislike it, buying major market radio stations that don’t have an extreme market penetration is just unrealistic for most broadcasters. The last decade has shifted that and a station like KSJO probably doesn’t bring much to Cumulus billing in the metro.

That being said - KSJO is awesome being a totally unique format that is well suited for the San Jose area.
