Super Bowl Commentaries: The Good, the Bad and the Ugly

Even Univision, which did the Spanish language version of the broadcast, set a record. Their viewers think football is played with a round ball and a touchdown is called a goal. They care less about the game than you. Yet millions of them watched this game.
As I fast-forwarded I stopped when I saw various audiences who weren't in the stadium.

They were all from countries where I thought football was played with a round ball.

Let David enter the chat now. He frequently presents descriptions (backed by statistical evidence) of attitudes toward U.S. sports in Latin American countries and among U.S. Hispanics that are neither bizarre nor stereotyped.
Did no one else see all those people sitting in front of TVs in other countries?

His: yes, or no or however the proper affirmative works there. The previous post: not so much.

A take on the Superb Owl and how mass experiences have been giving way to more specialized experiences. A quote:

...cultural commonality doesn't come from the enormous size of an audience but from the ability to find the people in it. Once upon a time, sheer audience mass was the easiest way to increase your odds of colliding with someone else who saw what you saw. After all, no matter how many people were watching Dallas, any person would only ever talk to a few of them. And you still can! The water cooler was just a place where you bumped into generally thirsty people; now, you can find specifically thirsty people by looking online for them.

You missed my point....by a mile.

Unless the two teams involved were East Keokuk A&M versus Central Arkansas Flaming Jockstraps the number of viewers this year would almost always exceed the number of viewers in prior years. That is due almost entirely to the growth of potential viewers new to the country. This year there was another distraction which drew in numbers of female viewers and had very little to do with the game itself. As someone else mentioned prior the number also might be inflated due to the increased number of game sources this year. I'll add that Vegas itself contributed to the crowd size and TV audience and everyone should already understand why.

In my opinion this game had exactly ONE outstanding play; the SF flea-flicker. That is not worthy of two conference champions.

I don't bet sports and am not involved in making money off sports or the industry in general so yes, the numbers mean nothing to me. Nor do they to the two-thirds (majority) of the USA that doesn't bet, party or care about the NFL. IMHO the game was an exhibition of mistakes and boredom, the halftime show was a loser and even the vaunted commercials blew it this year. Neither team played up to their potential and even the announcers were sub-par; one was so irritating I actually turned off the sound for most of the 2nd half. I'm talking about you Romo. Don't come to your next game with tonsillitis and quit talking over your partner.

For years I passed on watching the SB because it tended to be too much BS and not enough quality game. I'm sorry for wasting last Sunday this year and doubt I'll ever watch it again - even if the Niners are playing. If your opinion and plans differ - you do you. Doesn't bother me a bit.
What is a "Quality" game? 42-40 with no defense?
Almost every Super Bowl includes some fumbles and interceptions (Every NFL game for that matter).

New England trailed Atlanta 28-3 in the 3rd quarter and ended up winning in Overtime. Do you consider that one a Classic? Super Bowls have had blowouts and close games.
Why do you bother watching? The format and presentation is pretty well established and won't be changing much. As you said, millions of other people do not watch either; therefore you will not be missed...

Not a Spanish-speaking country, but one that is obsessed with "round ball" football -- Brazil -- will be getting an NFL regular season game next year. Video was shown during the CBS broadcast of a group of fans gathered in Rio to watch the Super Bowl, wearing the colors of the Chiefs, 49ers and other teams. No way of telling if any or most were American expats, or if Brazil is truly warming to the American gridiron game.
Like Mexico, I suspect that many if not most of the attendees will be "locals" who went to school or college in the U.S. and acquired the classic college love of the sport. These tend to be bilingual and in the upper income and professional categories. We are not going to see the "unwashed masses" lining up to buy tickets that cost as much as a year's salary for a laborer.
Of course, little can be inferred from a very small sampling that that Rio gathering represented, but I'd be surprised if the crowd for next season's game in Rio isn't mostly Americans who are either expats, tourists or workers doing business in Brazil.
Some expats, but the era of Americans living in Latin American nations to "show the natives how to do things" ended four or five decades ago. Example: Puerto Rico used to support... in the 70's... two profitable English language stations (an AC and a Top 40). Today, the only English stations are religious and get no audience. The population of "Mainlanders" who only speak English is practically none today.
This is the first I've heard of ANY interest in the NFL in Brazil, whereas the league has legitimately grown a following in England and Germany, both of which are also getting regular season games next season.
But it makes the sport seem "bigger" to the fans and makes extra money for the NFL. It's not a sport, it is a business.

As for a "sports" program where fans pay little attention to the game being played you need only to look at the coverage given the WM golf tournament here in Snottsdale.
Is there anything you do like? "Snottsdale?" Give me a break. I lived, decades ago, in Scottsdale and loved the community and the people. Maybe Paradise Valley, but not Scottsdale.

Read again "Unless the two teams involved were East Keokuk A&M versus Central Arkansas Flaming Jockstraps the number of viewers this year would almost always exceed the number of viewers in prior years."
This has been proven demonstrably false.

You do know it doesn't make you look remotely clever or your points somehow valid when you sound like a kindergartner making up juvenile nicknames?

None more juvenile than "Stupid Bowl."
You are right. I changed the "Stupid Bowl" title to one that is more neutral out of respect for those who are, in their immense majority, football fans.

I love like 3 Super Bowl Ad's

Mountain Dew Ad with Baja Blast/Zero Sugar
NFL Kid, Dreams of playing Footbal
NFL Sunday?Youtube TV, Fly Away

And this one the current MVP Patrick Mahomes from the Super Bowl gets compared to Tom Brady and former 49ers and Chiefs star Joe Montana for quarterbacks with at least three Super Bowl wins.

The Kansas City Chiefs are a dynasty, and Patrick Mahomes strengthened his argument as one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time during Sunday's 25-22 OT win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LVIII.

Mahomes, whose game-winning touchdown pass to Mecole Hardman in overtime gave the Chiefs the win, has joined Tom Brady, Joe Montana, Terry Bradshaw and Troy Aikman as the only starting quarterbacks with at least three Super Bowl wins. He was named Super Bowl MVP for the third time, a feat only Brady (five times) and Montana (three times) have matched.
