Guess I'm one of the few guys that don't listen to sports radio [except for baseball games]. All the sports yakkers cover are football, basketball, baseball, it's like no other sports exist. My interests lie with soccer and wrestling [the REAL wrestling, not that WWE/WWF crap]. I still get into fights with people that say that the Cavs brought Cleveland their first championship and I inform them they're wrong, the Cleveland Crunch [soccer] did that. Then they say "I'm talking about REAL sports" and then the fighting begins.

There is a reason why Tegna, despite being a pure-play television chain, hasn't sold off WBNS AM/FM — the Ohio State rights are extremely lucrative.
Say what you will about the WWE "crap", but their 2nd biggest show of year (Summer Slam) will be at Browns Stadium on August 3, and they'll draw 60-65K at the lakefront.
And by the way, where do a lot of amateur wrestlers wind up going (including guys like Kurt Angle, Brock Lesnar, and Gable Stevenson - all of whom have won NCAA Titles and/or Olympic Gold Medals)?
That's right...WWE.
And whether it's right, wrong or sideways, when cities count rings, it's always the big 4 (MLB, NFL, NBA, and NHL)
Just ask the Haslams...they have 2 MLS Cups with the Columbus Crew, but all people say are "yeah, but the Browns..."

And I've been involved with wrestling long enough [50+ years] to have known many more that walked away from it [describing it as "being sold a bill of goods" and others going on to MMA thinking they'd be the next star only to get the ever loving crap beaten out of them. MOST of them know that if they get a scholarship to college that's going to be it for their careers, not very many are going to be invited to try out for the Olympic wrestling team. Others will try to get into coaching or officiating. Same for soccer, [45+ years, and longer if you include me playing in elementary school in the 60s] I've known a quite few that have gone on to college and know a number that are playing for professional teams [and known a number that work or worked for the Crew] then have gone into coaching/front office. I have a problem with idiots that say "WWE is coming to town? Here, take my money, as much as you want!" and then turn around and bitch because they have to pay $8 to watch a high school or college match. Parents are even worse nowadays, screaming that it's "the coaches fault my kid didn't get a scholarship to XXXXX college." no matter that the only thing they're going to be able to kick is the bucket along with us telling them "look, less then 1/10th of 1% of kids anywhere gets a scholarship to play ANY sport in college"
And 90% of the time it's football.
To wit, the website for WBNS radio has a perpetual clock counting down to the next “Big Game”.
Yes, WBNS has both the Blue Jackets and Browns, but the Buckeyes have a dedicated nightly two-hour talk show (which I’m surprised hasn’t been syndicated on the OSU radio network yet).
Wasn't talking Columbus specifically, I meant the overall perception of the Haslams.
Haslams: "Look at our 2 MLS Cups"
Public: "Great...now when are the Browns gonna get a Lombardi Trophy?"
The Crew can win 10 Cups under the Haslams, but the Haslam's legacy will be defined by what the Browns do on their watch - just how it is.

I was just going to make this comment. WKNR hasn't been involved with Nielsen for at least 10-15 years. They're doing just fine.
Cleveland is a big football town. More people want to talk American football than soccer.
Even in the three years Cleveland didn't have a football team, the bulk of sports talk was speculation about the incoming team or what happens next with the NFL. The remainder was people griping about whatever tactical error Mike Hargrove made the previous night or pining for that elusive "ace" starting pitcher... and that's not counting the comedy bits Rizzo and Triv had on their respective shows.
Keep in mind that a market doesn't need to have a local football team to drive interest in football. Today interest can also be driven by fantasy teams and betting. Sports betting is legal in Ohio.
I'd imagine that if sports betting is legalized nationwide (with the obvious exception of Utah), fantasy sports will fade away. This is an instant-gratification, short-attention-span society, and the mind-boggling menu of events offered daily to sports bettors -- with results known and payoffs available within hours or even minutes -- is far more exciting and satisfying to sports fans looking for easy money than slogging through months of games and roster manipulations just to claim your share of a pool.
