Feb. '24 Ratings

It appears that IHeart’s music stations are doing considerably better in this market than those of Audacy, at least in the overall ratings.

Is Audacy Happy with WCBS FM’s Morning show ? To me there is very little reason to listen to it.
It really isn't aimed at older listeners. It's aimed at the audience who grew up in the 80s and 90s.

To my ears, it sounds like a Top 40 morning show in a small market, where these young radio people tell us too much about their lives and interests. They're not veterans like Scott Shannon and Patty Steele. But that probably says more about me than WCBS-FM.

Top 5+ demo rankings analysis from Research Director, Inc./XTrends:

25-54: 1. WLTW 2. WHTZ 3. WKTU 4. WSKQ 5. WAXQ 8. WCBS-FM (down from #3)
18-34: 1. WLTW 2. WKTU 3. WHTZ 4. WAXQ (down from #1T) 5. WSKQ 9T. WCBS-FM (down from #5) 9T. WBLS
18-49: 1. WLTW 2. WHTZ 3. WKTU (up from #6) 4. WAXQ 5. WSKQ 7. WCBS-FM (down from #1)
WNYC would be in third place overall if you combine the FM and AM ratings, but they don't appear in those rankings. Are their listeners that old? They do run promos encouraging people to become a "legacy WNYC member" by leaving money to them in your will.

Speaking of which, is 820 WNYC the most-listened-to 10 kW or less AM station in the USA?

In terms of Cume, in January it was 10th... though some of these have the listenership they do by virtue of Full FM or FM Translator simulcasts.

I believe WNYC AM is a simulcast of the FM, except between 8 p.m.-midnight during the week.
On weekends, WNYC AM & FM do have different schedules during the day.

Or being at the bottom of the band like KFYI (550), KSFO (560), KLAC (570), KOGO (600), and KILT (610), where a 5 kW signal can cover more than a 50 kW signal would near the top of the dial.

You are looking at 6+ numbers. They are meaningless.

Unless you can see at least 18-49, 18-34 and 25-54, you can't judge any station's results. Ad buyers don't look at those 6+ and 12+ numbers, which is why they are given away for free.

Beyond that, radio is not a "horse race". If you are in the top 20 stations or so in New York's MSA survey, you likely are making money. And many niche stations also do well, or they would not be on the air.

KILT is no longer 5kw. Their legacy transmitter site was sold and taken out of service in early February, and the station will run 2.7kw at a different diplexed facility once construction is complete.

And still 2.7 kw on 610 will cover more than 50 kw at the top of the dial.

Research Director reports on those demos -- at least showing the top stations in each one -- and from that we can conclude that Barry's assessment is correct.
In many markets, the difference between #4 and #8 in a specific demographic is minimal.

Agencies generally buy based on rating, not share.

I'm looking at a recent (so as not to give protected current data) month in Houston and there are seven stations with a 0.3 rating and 12 with a 0.2 rating. That takes care of the top 19 stations.

Maybe actually it's just that everything else is tanking. Hip hop listeners are streaming and other younger listeners continue to migrate from fm so Seems like many formats that were at the top are now shockingly low
Which ironically is killing radio 📻

Race Taylor Should have been put in mornings he's an NYC icon!

Now we can all see what you're talking about:

For February though IHeart has WLTW-Z100-KTU-Q104.3. In the top 5 in 25-54, 18-34 and 18-49. So it does appear IHeart is doing better than Audacy. What hasn’t been mentioned for awhile not only here but almost everywhere is Morning show Ratings.

That's because they're not publicly available. Occasionally a trade will do an article on a city's morning shows. The last time Inside Radio looked at NYC was in 2021:

At the time, Scott Shannon was at WCBS, so this is obviously dated.
