A pirate radio station on 87.9 from Albert Road in Poughkeepsie NY was located by directional finding device, and received a cease and desist order from the FCC. I never heard them, but I have not checked the bottom of the FM dial lately . The 87.9 station reportedly called themselves "Island Jamz"playing Caribbean music . The story on the WPDH news website said the had ten days to prove the had ceased operation or they could face a two million dollar fine. Ouch. I wonder how long they were operating. I checked on Tuesday and they appeared off the air.
The same story mentioned a second illegal station operating on 104.5 out of a Caribbean restaurant on third avenue , Mount Vernon, NY. That station reportedly has evaded FCC punishment for 15 years. They could face a penalty of 2.3 million dollars . There was no mention of their format, but the cited alleged operators of the two stations was different. The FCC cited the owners of the properties where the transmissions originated.
