Pirate Stations In Poughkeepsie & Mount Vernon NY Busted by The FCC

A pirate radio station on 87.9 from Albert Road in Poughkeepsie NY was located by directional finding device, and received a cease and desist order from the FCC. I never heard them, but I have not checked the bottom of the FM dial lately . The 87.9 station reportedly called themselves "Island Jamz"playing Caribbean music . The story on the WPDH news website said the had ten days to prove the had ceased operation or they could face a two million dollar fine. Ouch. I wonder how long they were operating. I checked on Tuesday and they appeared off the air.
The same story mentioned a second illegal station operating on 104.5 out of a Caribbean restaurant on third avenue , Mount Vernon, NY. That station reportedly has evaded FCC punishment for 15 years. They could face a penalty of 2.3 million dollars . There was no mention of their format, but the cited alleged operators of the two stations was different. The FCC cited the owners of the properties where the transmissions originated.

And maybe on to 91.3 in the Glens Falls market???

I think someone has to complain to the FCC for them to take enforcement action. They likely don't have the resources to travel the country looking for unlicensed operations, then work to locate the source. The FCC has in recent years stepped up shutting down these nuisance or worse stations but they need to know they exist.

A local pirate was reported months ago (not by me, but by a friend), but it’s still on. Ironic that an illegal station exists, but our local high school’s station has been down since November 1st. An STA has been requested.

At least the FCC is able to hold landlords accountable if the pirate station is in a rental house or apartment.

If you are a fan of Caribbean music if it’s not on any of the pirate stations in the Hudson Valley, guess what? Roadblock Radio is coming to WCBS-FM’s HD3 channel starting May 1st replacing Scott Shannon’s “True Oldies Channel” on 101.1, or you can stream it online. The link is down below.

I always wondered: do these Pirate stations have advertisers, of are the just a person who thinks laws don't apply to them? Because if they are making money that kinda goes against all the posts on this site that OTA radio is dying. If your group isn't being served musically it's not that hard to set up a streaming "station" without having to deal with the FCC. Also no censorship of lyrics.

I think someone else said some of the pirates that run the stations are from countries without an FCC type authority, so they don't realize there are low power broadcasting limits, etc. in the US.

One of the unique things about the US is we are a nation of laws. If you don't want to do due diligence and follow the laws, find somewhere else to live. Common sense should make you wonder why the are not a bunch of stations on open channels by your fellow "former" countrymen. They left their homeland to get away the lawlessnes or dictatorship governments. If you are just here for the economic benefit you should be aware of the laws that brought about that economy.
