590 WARM is Silent Again

Their filing for a silent STA on 6/4/24 states that they have lost their program source. They’ve also filed a silent STA for WARM’s translator, W269CF on 101.7.

Hmm. They had been simulcasting co-owned WLGD-FM. On June 1st, WLGD was sold to Times-Shamrock, and began simulcasting WEZX.

So yes, they lost their program source.

According to the FCC's AM query they are still directional and 430 watts directional at night. I guess they are saving some on their power bill. One would think they would have figured out how to drop the directional maintenance and land cost. The best I can think of is is this thing is only used "feed" translator(s).

It now appears that WARM is "dead".

According to their Facebook page:

"It has been an honor being NEPA’s classic country station and serving the area for the past three years. Thank you to all who have been here with us since the beginning. We truly could not do it without you.
We may be signing off, but you can still get your fix of Bigfoot Country in NEPA and the Pocono Mountains at BigfootPoconos.com

Happy trails, friends. Until we meet again somewhere down the road.
-Jeff, Willie, Christie, Charlie, Karen, and the entire Bigfoot Legends team"

I guess Seven Mountains decided to shut down Bigfoot Legends here is because of the overlap from Bigfoot Country, which can be easily heard via WCFT 106.5 from Bloomsburg. That signal covers most of Luzerne County well and can also be heard in parts of Scranton. So there is NO need for duplicate "Bigfoot Countries" in the W-B area.

According to radio-loctor 269CF is retransmitting WZAL 730 but the translator (269CF) is listed as off the air. WZAL (listed as on air) already has 3 translators listed on Radio-Locator but not 269CF. Sometimes Internet info is behind FCC filings a few days. I suspect by the end of the month everything will be posted or if something is to be sold it will be listed.

Indeed, Radio-Locator may be out of date in this case. The FCC listing shows W269CF associated with WARM.

I use to used the FCC site all the time but the past several months I have had issues with FCC site. Particularly when you click a link. My virus ware stops anything that doesn't start downloading in 30 seconds. It work a couple of years ago but they did some kind of upgrade. Fccdata.org has you downloading pages before you can look at them. Use to be except the history cards you could "see" about everything on the FFC site without to download. A lot of the folks on this site use Radio-locator because it's easy. The last time I had to seriously look at something was last July, and the AM Query was so slow I had to turn off my virus protection to make it work. Glad the commission has straightened out their site.

Radio-Locator is as they used to say "For Entertainment Purposes Only". Their data cannot be taken seriously. Easy doesn't mean accurate.

The having to download links part of FCCData has to do with the FCC's shift from the old CDBS database to LMS. It's displaying the same data but instead of in the browser tab you need to download a PDF. The issues you mention with your virusware means that software needs to be trained. Every link goes to FCC.gov and is safe.

And omitted from what you posted is "A new programming source is being established and it is expected to be available in thirty days."

Meaning the station and translator are going to be leased or sold.

Can't find the post but some where on this site there was a post that had the translator facilities # begining digits which indicated if the translator was permanently tied to an AM.

Stupid question, but I'm going to ask it anyway. With WARM on 590 being gone, any chance of WHP 580 being able to expand its limited nighttime signal. WHP-AM Radio Station Coverage Map
The question is: "why would an AM in a relatively small market want to spend a lot of money on night coverage when so little ad revenue comes from nights?"

Maybe they could adjust their pattern some but they have an FM translator on 103.7 that covers most of the market so any funds spent for upgrading the AMs signal would have a minimal return on investment if any.

If something major fails on the AM plant. I wouldn't be surprised if they downgrade to a class D and sell some land.

No, for several reasons.

First, the WARM license still exists. Just because it's silent under an STA doesn't mean it's gone, and in fact there's every reason to expect it will return.

Second, WHP protects more than just WARM. It had to protect WTAG 580 in New England, WMCA 570 in NYC, and so on. Even if WARM did go away, it wouldn't open up much room for anything.
