WFBC flip coming?

Per Facebook:

“For nearly 30 years, B93.7 has been a part of countless families’ lives across Greenville, the Upstate, and beyond—including our friends in North Carolina and Georgia. We’re incredibly thankful to all of you who’ve welcomed us as part of your extended family ❤️

change is on the horizon…9/23/2024”

Magic 93.7 in time for Christmas music? 93.7 The Block? Stunt? Audacy has flipped a number of stations this year…

I wonder if “change” could be a code word for some sort of contest? If so, the way they announced it seems a bit odd, and in advance.

WFBC did just have a bad month and hasn’t done great for a while, although the exhausted Hawk and Tom seemed to be propping it up. I think they’re serious, but we’ll have to see I guess.

Maybe a shift to Classic Hits or AC since we've been without their old sister Magic and Earth FM for so long now? Earth 2.0 ? Magic 3.0? 🤷‍♂️🍀 Maybe swap out WYRD off 98.9 after Election Day too, while we're at it. But it's About Time, Finally! Something else to look forward to, Exciting & Suspenseful. Can't Wait 🤞🌌🌎

I remember WHZT Hot 98.1 did that many years ago ... Promoting "Hot 98.1 ... is Dead." With incomplete details, and its seemed like they were gonna make big changes, but it was just very misleading for a contest, which was ultimately noting they were ".... Dead serious about giving away some money." I think that was like 2010 or something. Seemed like that was a big waste of time. Their signal and programming is completely useless east of Spartanburg anyway, and their parent, Summit, is still running (flooding) us with Not 1, Not 2, but 3 different Urban stations.

The way B-93.7 just worded their recent post, it sounds its a very significant change, now scheduled for a certain time, like saying it with optimism, (which they definitely didn't do with Magic leaving 98.9, and then again a year later moving off 106.3) ... Perhaps its not just a short promo, well perhaps it would finally give WMYI some competition, if we can even call it that, or at least something else that plays Classic 1980/2000s. WLNK in Charlotte has been doing better at that lately.

agree. a shift to a version of the old magic with a new name which musically would be a better fit for the aging morning show is a possibility and could still do christmas for those advertisers.

Just checked "theblock937.com", "937theblock.com", "937earthfm", "earthfm937.com" and none have been registered. "magic937.com" was registered back in February and belongs to a station in Mississippi.

I bet its Christmas music.

I checked the social media pages for the other Audacy stations and don’t see them teasing any kind of move.

If they did change formats, my money is on AC. Magic comes back, gets a month or so in with the AC format, then Christmas music. It would also knock 102.5 down enough to probably put WROQ back ahead. They’ve been preserving Magic online and OTA for a reason in my opinion.

Audacy isn’t going to do classic hits when they already have classic rock.

My prediction is some kind of contest.

Although I wouldn't be surprised if they shift the format to more of a hot AC with magic and earth both gone. Keep the B name, that's for sure. I don't think that would be done by a big announcement. Just subtle changes.

WFBC is currently playing their powers around 90-100x/week (as opposed to WHZT’s insane 130x/week). They’ve added in some more gold material since the CHR doldrums started, but it’s still heavy on new and recurrent music. The more I think about it, I see several scenarios if this ends up being more than a contest:

Shift to a gold heavy CHR format, which has been hit or miss when tried in various markets. I don’t really see this as something there would be a 10-day announcement for, or much of an announcement at all. Hot AC could be more likely, but WMYI tried that for almost a decade and flopped. I would want to try AC in this market before Hot AC.

Somebody from Hawk and Tom is leaving or retiring.

An all out flip. They acknowledged Magic was going away for a week or so before 106.3 was sold. If a format change happens, I see AC landing on 93.7. Probably promoted as “Magic is back, just in time for Christmas!” With a month or so of the AC format prior.

I don’t know. The whole thing is odd. A 7am Monday announcement during the morning show (if there still is one?) sounds like a contest, but again, a 10 day lead time and the way this has been worded sounds more significant. B93.7 has been mediocre at best for years and is very tired. Audacy has made some unpredicted changes this year across the country, so it’s hard to rule anything out.

95SX Charleston plays some of their popular Chappell Roan and Shaboozey stuff at a once an hour clip. I don’t know what WFBC does, but top 40 formats in this era are pretty useless when everyone has a Spotify playlist.

They’ve had the same liners and VO for at least a decade and it doesn’t matter. They continue to plug along at 95.1.

I just looked at the past week's latest diary market ratings releases, and in nearly every market the CHR station is doing very well competitively.
