September numbers are here

September numbers: Houston/Galveston

What has happened to The Spot? Sinking. Music leans harder than it used to. Running off a big slice of the audience?

The Box and The Beat with declining numbers. Target demos not using radio any more?

KHCB in the threes?

Vida Unida cracks the twos.

93Q far ahead of The Bull.

All the current Regional Mexican stations with mediocre numbers. Big opportunity for SBS and 92.1

Houston-Galveston numbers with rankings by the key demos should be available from Research Director tomorrow. I can post same if you all would like, as I do for L.A., S.F. and S.D.

In the meantime, please try to remember that the 6+ "vanity" numbers do not provide a definitive view for discussion purposes.

Look, here's one now:
6
Here’s another Houston 6+ number:

Makes you wonder about the cybersecurity practices and whether the database has been hacked.

Since I am told some people are annoyed by my posting the demo numbers, here is a link to Research Director for those that want to see them, and the rest of you can blissfully ignore me.

The Box and The Beat Trap Swag music has never been good most of the fan base does not even want to hear it any more. I have been saying this for 6 year now The Box needs to tweak the format not a 100% change they need to play Rap from 1985 to 2004 with 75% of it being southern and west coast rap with good focus being on 90s Houston rap music.

KGLK also down over a share compared to two months ago, so possibly some panel issues affecting both of the (mostly) pre-2000 music stations in the market. KKHH still cuming high, so possibly just a loss of a few heavy listeners, but regardless I do think the more pop friendly direction they had under previous PD Chase Murphy would be more effective for competing with KODA.

Looking at the demo numbers, interesting to see KLTN tied for #6 18-49 in the first article in awhile the site has shown their position in that demo. Seems most of the people who stopped listening are 50+ listeners who gave Raul Brindis high TSL, so that may be why they're not showing as well 6+ now.

Why? I see nothing unusual other than the ongoing issue with recruiting younger Spanish dominant Hispánics.

You know that both of them do extensive and regular listener research? Every song they play or might play is researched with a sample representing the target audience.

The Spot seems to have revamped its playlist recently to a harder, more Rock oriented sound. They would appear to be separating themselves further from Sunny. Not sure if this is a response to declining numbers or the cause of them.

Their new sound over the past couple of months is much more in line with the sound of a typical Jack FM, though, so I guess they just thought it was time to move towards a more "true" Adult Hits sound after years of having one foot in both the Adult Hits and Classic Hits formats (albeit with few differences from a "true" Classic Hits station under Chase Murphy). I noticed the changes around the first week of the August book, so it seems like the changes caused the decline, but in my opinion it would be too quick to say there's not enough of an audience in Houston for a traditional Jack FM type Adult Hits station to be top 5 in the market based off just two books.

I kinda remember Spot tried doing a harder, more rock-leaning playlist right after Entercom took it over from CBS, and it stayed that way a while before it started to soften and get more new wave-y around early 2019 or so. Or maybe I was just listening to it at the wrong times. Who knows.

I can assure you there were no music shifts made when Entercom took over, nor were there any attempts at a more rock-leaning playlist. The playlist was the playlist, with powers and secondaries remaining constant and additional titles shifting in and out for variety.

It appears a new music test kicked in during August, with a couple dozen previously un-played songs entering the mix, and an equal amount of titles moving off, along with many changes in rotation levels. Generally speaking, those kinds of subtle shifts do not make visible impacts in ratings in the short term, it takes more than a month or two for those changes to "sink in" with casual listeners who are only listening a few minutes a day.
