David Gow Buys the Translator

I'll partially agree with that, but it was pretty apparent with the botched launch of "1560 The Game", in 2007, that David Gow was biting off more than he could chew.

I was editor of a now-long defunct high school sports website back then and I remember Gow coming in to talk to us about some on-air opportunities with 1560. Those eventually happened and I appreciated the chance for our company to contribute to their football coverage. But as a listener, it was tough to follow their station with all the signal issues, the low nighttime power, etc. As a result, my sports radio fix came from Charlie Pallilo and other 790 hosts, plus Astros coverage on 740 and occasionally 610's programming. They were simply much easier to hear, especially at my home on the League City-Friendswood border.
I remember being excited to hear when 1560 planned to put a tower farm out toward Katy with much more power beamed over the city. Alas, I moved back to Ohio before that happened. As I remember, even that was delayed from the original expected launch date.

Would be a bad move to go spanish now. LMN will soon relaunch Klat and Sbs will have and create a great impact in the market. I think we will start to see 1 or 2 stations drop like flies.

KFNC is promoting their annual listeners appreciation party on Friday, September 20:

Guess they aren’t going anywhere in the next few weeks. 97.5 is also running Texas A&M football again this fall.

Getting the feeling that the station has been taken off the market, and will now take some time to decide what to do next. Note that David Gow stars his new job as President/CEO of the Center for Houston’s Future on September 3, but will remain Chair of Gow Media.

Might be interesting to go to that party and poke around for information about what is likely to happen with KFNC.

Meanwhile it has been six months since the Gow application to purchase K223CW was filed with the FCC. The Commission is still sitting on that one. Also the related sale of K223DH from Centro Cristiano to SDK Franco (which would then be flipped to Gow) is also stalled at the FCC. Wonder if trouble with those translator sales was the reason behind KFNC apparently being pulled off the market.

I suspect any change on 97.5 won’t come until well into 2025.

Anything can still happen. Stations have gone off the air right after (and even before) hosting or sponsoring major events. Being the affiliate of Texas A&M football isn't going to stop them. A&M would probably find a new home right away since Houston is an A&M town

I think the sbs flip will begin the domino effect.
Perhaps the Power 105.3 folks are waiting to see what SBS specifically does on 92.1, and then will make a decision on the direction of 97.5, if previous speculation about them taking over programming is correct. They probably wouldn’t want to launch anything directly competing with SBS.

Could something like this be a future format on 97.5? Or are the signal and demographics unfavorable?

Waterloo changes formats nearly monthly. 97.5 isn’t even sold and people love hopelessly speculating on it.

I listen to it on KODA-HD3. Nice music selection and commercial free. My only complaint is it has a lot of dropouts.. Seem to be most prevalent in Fort Bend County around the vicinity of SH99 Grand Parkway & FM1093 Westpark Tollway and around downtown. Most notably on I69N (US 59N)between I45 and I10

This actually is a format that would be suitable for those eastern rimshots. 93.3 included.
The Bilingual English music with Spanish announcing depends on having a local population that is Spanish dominant, middle class and who grew up listening to English pop music.

That exists in all Latin America where the upper and middle income groups (A and B our to A, B, C, D and E socioeconomic levels) give significant listening to stations playing English language music.

The places where there are middle class Hispanic immigrants are cities like Orlando and Miami and, maybe, Tampa.

And Fort Myers

Right?? I mean, I don't think KFNC was speculated on this much when it was made public knowledge that Cumulus had to dump it way back when.

Christ, that was 2012. 97.5 has been swirling in the toilet for a long time now. Last time it was relevant (sorry but not sorry, rock fans) was in the Power incarnation. That's been, what, 20 years ago now?? 😲

XEW has been playing English language music at night for years, with all imaging, commercials, and announcements in Spanish. This may be a new concept to Austin, but anywhere from the Gulf coast up to the state line with Arkansas, it's been available to anyone interested and willing to migrate over to 900 kHz for a listen.

As the hackneyed saying goes, “Where there’s smoke, there’s fire.” KFNC currently looks like Pittsburgh in the 1930s. Lots of indications that a change is on the way, though I still don’t expect anything to happen before the end of the year.

Power 97.5 KRWP was 2002-05. That call recently became available again after being relinquished by a station in Pampa, Texas.
