Phoenix ratings for October 2024

Here is the Phoenix radio ratings for October. Phoenix
The Lamp Timer is a solid mid-1's, naturally.

But I'm surprised that heritage CHR KZZP-FM is only at 1.8 in these beauty contest numbers. Not only is that behind 101.5 Live (2.6), but it seems real low for a CHR -- the iHeart CHR in Seattle is at 4, roughly the same as its rival. Any insight?

You have to look at the demo breakouts to see CHRs. KALV is #3 in 18-34. But the big surprise is that KFYI-AM is #2 in that same demo. How can that be? What it tells me is that younger demos are using broadcast radio less, so the older demos are tilting the balance. That's just my take.

I always preferred Kiss FM over Live, but that's just me. These are low numbers for both stations considering their signals. So naturally, I want to ask whether Phoenix can support two CHRs? Not that I have a better format idea.

You're assuming these two stations are operating as single stations, the way radio worked over 30 years ago. Today both stations are part of a multi-station cluster, so they exist to deliver a specific sales demographic to the group. When you look at Audacy and iHeart, they each need a station that attracts younger demos, and CHR does that. Each company already has its share of older-skewing classic stations. But you're right, there aren't a lot of good options. When Audacy had a low-rated CHR in LA, it flipped it to a simulcast of its all-news AM. No such option in Phoenix.

Wow, KTAR is not benefiting from the looming election at all, while KFYI and KJZZ show big gains. In fact KTAR wasn't in the top demo rankings, and even dropped a bit in the 6+ showing.

The thing I notice is that both KFYI and KJZZ had big increases, but low cume. So that tells me people turn the station on, and leave it on.

Good to see that KJZZ (i.e. NPR) is trampling all over KTAR. (y)

I have to admit I'm pleasantly-- if not shockingly-- surprised by this, given the market that it's in.

Does anyone find KTAR listenable outside of AMD? Broomhead never changes. Ramsey hosts are just as annoying than Mr Rice n Beans. Chris & Board Op are a strange pairing. Outspoken with Bruce and Gaydos is worse than Mac & Gaydos and Chad & Gaydos. But hey, the station bills the pants off everyone else.

Just venting. 🦨

Bonneville's really blowing it by not inviting Pat McMahon back for any of their "war room" segments. Him, I'd want to hear what he has to say. And isn't he the one who originated that segment for the station? But any of the others? Meh. Not so much.

KJZZ would be better if they had more local content - nobody refers to it as a "KJZZ" (it's "NPR") - and played cooler music. Why can't KJZZ be Phoenix's KCRW?

FYI: KJZZ has a larger share of the audience: 4.5 vs 1.8. LA's NPR News station is KPCC, and it also has a larger share than KCRW with a 2.3.

Pat McMahon is 89 years old, but his bio says he continues to work in radio and TV, for KTAR and KAZT-TV.

I know Brad Perry has a morning show on KAZT, but is Pat still on there? Also, there is still the God Show that he does on KTAR.

I believe Pat is still with KAZT, but doesn't do as much as he used to. Maybe the occasional interview or promo.

I don't think "The God Show" is on KTAR's schedule anymore.

It sounds like Pat is finally slowing down after all these years, he's been a fixture in Valley broadcasting for over 60 years. So he's no longer with KTAR in any capacity? I believe Pat McMahon along with Preston Westmoreland were the first talk show hosts on KTAR when they shifted from All News to News/Talk.

Yeah, KTAR removed The God Show six years ago I believe. McMahon then signed on to Dave Pratt's podcast station Star Worldwide Network in April 2019.

A couple of things stand out for me from this report. First is the fact that the stream listeners are still being counted separately from over-the-air listeners by Nielsen. (I believe this is due to the separate advertisements being played on the streams.) I suspect that if you add in the streaming listeners to the over-the-air ratings for some of the stations that they would show higher ratings and move up in the rankings.

The second thing that interested me was the pouncing of KOAI on KAZG. True, the latter is AM-only, but its translator does cover most of the valley, and if you have an HD receiver (as I do), you can hear it on KDKB's HD2 channel.

I'm guessing that the reason for KOAI's runaway with the oldies audience is that it has a larger playlist than KAZG and that it tends to feature a softer variety than the Scottsdale outlet. Also Tucson's KDRI-AM, though its daytime signal makes it well into the Phoenix area, didn't make the ratings list at all. Hmm!
