So a bunch of dead djs with one live dj .. i give this 6 to 9 months. Look back at what Marc has done, nothing lasts long.
It was Charlie Tuna 7-9am, and now weirdly, it's back to Monte Maria. We'll have to see how the day plays out ...It's not flipped as of now. Still Espanol as of 9:10a
BTW, the Charlie Tuna morning show was put together with his bits from the past, and even back announced some of the songs. Overall, it was well put together. You wouldn't know how dated it was, until the bit where Charlie talked about the best way to clean your dirty CD's.
I wonder if Marc ever found the Latina girlfriend he was looking for:And then we have the "mastermind" of this debacle, Marc Paskin, who doesn't exactly have an enviable track record, to put it politely. To put is less politely, he has a reverse Midas touch ... everything he touches turns to lead.
Managing a Mexican station is difficult, mainly because of the fiscal times between the electroral body (INE) and the times of government. We are talking about 195 daily spots of 30 seconds from 6 am to 11 pm
There are so many potential pitfalls here, I hardly know where to start.
First and foremost, as has been discussed to death in multiple threads on RD, Oldies is a dying format. Only a handful of 70s titles still get Classic Hits airplay now, and fewer and fewer of those survive the annual post-Christmas library purges that most stations go though. (Even the early 80s are becoming toxic at a lot of CH stations.) And these guys want to play songs even older than that.
50kw blowtorch or not, AM is already pretty much dead for music. Unless you are the billionaire who owns WABC and indulge your own personal sense of nostalgia by putting Cousin Brucie on the air Saturday nights, there's a limit to how much money you are willing to lose. There's a reason why the number of AM stations with FM translators is so high ... it's because they have to do that to attract listeners.
And there's the big stumbling block: There is never going to be sufficient advertising revenue to keep paying XEPRS' owners for the brokered time, even if that's at the low end of what we've speculated it to be.
The billboard campaign will only get the attention of those who are old enough to remember Wolf, Charlie and Don ... and who actually do remember them. With the exception of those few months that Charlie drove back and forth to KCBQ to work out his non-compete when he left KHJ, the vast majority of San Diegans don't have any real memory of him. Even less for Donald Revert Steele. And the big Wolfman Jack era preceded both of them (or at best, only overlapped a few years). Big name talent of the past has no relevance to today's listeners; I offer as proof the fact that Gene Knight, who was one of the recognizable names for four decades, has not been on the air in San Diego since KXSN/KYXY blew him out at the beginning of 2021.*
And then we have the "mastermind" of this debacle, Marc Paskin, who doesn't exactly have an enviable track record, to put it politely. To put is less politely, he has a reverse Midas touch ... everything he touches turns to lead.
If this thing (or Ching 😝 ) lasts a year before collapsing on itself, I will be very surprised.
(*-Disclaimer: Gene is still on the air as my liner voice on KRKE in Albuquerque. But I doubt they can hear it in San Diego.)
theres no way you can fit 195 30 second spots into that time frame
at least a copy years ago, MG self syndicated. I worked for an "NPR" that carried his shows.Inside Radio mentioned the flip in this afternoon's "News Bites":
![]()
News Bites: WXMX, Doug Gottlieb, XEPRS.
WXMX Memphis raised over $920,000 for Ronald McDonald House Charities through its 34th annual radiothon… Fox Sports Radio’s Doug Gottlieb, who is also the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men’s basketballwww.insideradio.com
Apparently the Charlie Tuna and Wolfman Jack shows are coming from a syndicator, which means Lou Smith and the Fergusons are at least getting some compensation. Although it doesn't say so, I suspect that M.G. Kelly is similarly selling them his weekly shows and the reruns of The Real Don Steele, which he acquired the rights to several years back.
I still have no idea who "El Chingón" is, if someone would like to enlighten me.

That's about right, its one stop set per hour, around 5 minutes in length. Let's be glad the FCC doesn't do this in the US. Maybe Mexico should lighten up on this requirement, considering the economic challenges facing radio. You don't want to give listeners more reason to tune out.Well, you can, but it would require a 5½ minute stopset every hour with nothing but the Mexican government spots.
195 30-second spots ÷ 2 = ~98 minutes per day ÷ 17 hours = ~5 minutes, 45 seconds per hour
One of the things that are not often reported is that, while still nearly 90% of adults in the US use radio weekly, in Mexico the number is closer to 70%... a third of adults don't use radio. And the prevalence of alternative media like streaming and the like is much lower. Mexican radio has, in my opinion, such low usage because of the horrendous amount of ads and government messages every hour. That's about right, its one stop set per hour, around 5 minutes in length. It's been Live from the 60's since 3pm. Maybe Marc Paskin is El Chingon....hmmm
Maybe you're right. Paskin is from Michigan. El Chingon has a slight midwestern accent. Chingon likes to imitate Elvis and Tom Jones on his show. Paskin has videos on YouTube doing impressions of Elvis and Tom Jones. On one of his Elvis impersonation videos, Paskin does speak in his normal voice, and yes he does sound like Chingon.Maybe Marc Paskin is El Chingon....hmmm
