KEGL / KZPS PD has been let go

I think some people expected him to be a part of the fallout from the KEGL format change. It didn't happen then. But it happened now.

The rumors are that we will see more regional format management going forward. Fewer local PDs (especially given that there are fewer local on-air staff to manage). That won't mean much for these two stations, since their playlists were similar to those in other cities. It'll be more interesting to see how they handle currents-based stations.

If iHeart hires Kramer and Kramer fixes KEGL and brings it to heights untold, you know what, he deserves his flowers for it. Thousand bouquets of flowers for showing everyone that the conventional wisdom is wrong.

According to the reports on the iHeart layoffs, the local day-to-day programming of stations is moving to national teams. Presumably, there will be no one hired to be the new KEGL or KZPS or KHKS PD as those positions were eliminated in this round.

They might become more of a fulltime national feed like the Townsquare stations. I checked out the Townsquare stations in East Texas and the Ark-La-Tex. They all run the same feed 24/7 with voice tracked DJ’s and perhaps one local DJ, with their country stations an exception and possibly their urban AC’s another exception (I couldn’t get a playlist). I know their classic rockers and CHR’s run the same feed 24/7 for sure.

I think iHeart already does this in smaller markets. I remember the Eagle running the same feed as KBRQ, Waco, during that “freaky” time when they were relocated to KEGL-HD2. I also heard KEGL and KBRQ running the same feed during the weekend a few years ago (Premium Choice?).

What?!? You mean the "Fabulous" Jennifer Tyler, I mean Jen Austin of course, isn't sitting in front of a golden mic there in the plush, lavish Townsquare broom closet, I mean gorgeous downtown studio on S. Broadway? On the square? Did I mention...in downtown?

Surely, you jest, Jay!

Did you notice, too, that Walton & Johnson, minus the Walton, has booted John Boy and Billy from mornings on 96.1? Already had W&J on K-TUX, but now it's available two places, and if you miss something and want to make sure of what you thought you heard, program a button for both. 96's feed is behind K-TUX by nearly a minute.

KNUE has syndicated fare, of course, but mornings are local, as is mid-day. Everything else, as I recall, is flown in from the bird. Not a KNUE fan myself, so I may be missing a shift that's local and I've overlooked. The Ranch has long time country voice Charlie O in afternoon, but mornings are Big D & Bubba.

If you want live, local, and even give you enough of your very own airtime to sell your non-running, just needs a filter you think, 20 inch Hyper not-so-tough push mower, just dial up the three 9's on your radio dial. As long as you're in Tyler, Lindale or Mini-get-down-ola.

Longview, well, they're just screwed.

...and please, when you call in to sell that $20 mower, for God's sake, turn down your radio. Thank you. 😉

Lots of morning openings at iHeart classic rock stations right now: Boston, Seattle, Chicago, and now Charlotte.

KEGL Dallas is running a morning show meant for alternative stations, so I doubt it's a long-term strategy.
