Buffalo WYRK Clay & Company

This happened over a week ago. Reported here:

As we've been saying, 4th quarter sales for all radio companies have been well below expectations. iHeart, Cumulus, Townsquare, and Bonneville are all cutting staff as a result.

RadioInsight made mention today of some of the cuts Cumulus is making.

I'm hearing about 5% cuts across the board at Townsquare. I guess she was the only staffer than fit that target. Too bad. Young people interested in radio, and good at it, are in short supply. Then again, radio management at the highest levels does really seem to be looking at the long-term health of the industry.

Some companies use the "Last Fired - First Fired" policy when making staff cuts. It's safe to assume that she wasn't making anything close to the main hosts salary. Corporate could have dropped him unless they left it up to local management on who had to go...

The previous post should have said "Last Hired-- First Fired". In any event, most stations don't have air staff they can cut. That was done long ago...
The day is fast approaching when most stations below the top 20 markets will have no local air staff at all. It will be all voice-tracked from out of market or syndicated programming. It's all basic 6th grade math. What comes in has to be more than what goes out if you want to stay in business.

I don't think it has to do with market size as much as it does with the economics. There are some stations outside the Top 100 markets that have live & local staff. But they find a way to keep expenses low enough to make the math work, as you say.
