John Boy & Billy Ink Renewal

It was on the front page of the online edition when it happened. By Sunday, it's old news and won't be on the front page.

If you click on my link, you can read the story. You don't have to wait.
We were talking about a front page that people could keep, should they want to.

He makes $200 million from Spotify. Can you imagine how much it would take to get him on the radio?
The very big name podcasters don't need radio. And they'd probably be stupid to do it. Let us count the reasons. First of all, they make more money online. Second, they don't have to wake up in the middle of the night to do a morning show five days a week. Third, they don't have penny-pincher bosses breathing down their necks. Fourth, job security is in their own hands, not the station owners. Fifth, no office politics involving people not connected to the show.

And, most of all, they run their own operation. They're the boss. Which gives them complete artistic freedom, with no format and no corporate suits or government regulators. They deal directly with the sponsors, distributors, etc. The buck stops far closer to them.

Quite a few of the bigger podcasters were people who got chewed up and spit out by the radio industry, such as Marc Maron, Adam Carolla and Phil Hendrie, to name only a few. Think they'd want to go back to radio? What's the point? I wouldn't be surprised to see Howard Stern eventually go the podcast route.

I have no idea who any of the people that you just mentioned are.

While some do make more money doing podcasts, that’s not the majority. Radio offers a chance for more exposure in most cases, especially if it’s syndicated, and some people prefer structure and not having to deal with sales and other issues.

There are positives and negatives both ways, and you sound very negative, bitter and only interested in airing out your personal grievances.

A lot of morning jocks don’t get up at 3am any more. The content is recorded the day before and pieced together ahead of time. Some do, but it’s the exception and not the rule.

Finally, I was only speculating. iHeart is most likely putting a syndicated morning show on all of their classic rock stations. Who do you think it will be? They’re not going to lay off all of these morning shows without a solution lined up.

This headline isn't right. Syndication means it is on several stations, and Radioinsight said it still will be. It just won't be on in Charlotte unless a new station picks it up.

I also realized one very important thing. While my Sunday paper is late (it's supposed to come in the mail on Saturday but has failed to three times since September 16) it likely won't have a front page headline.

Every Sunday paper there is one big topic and in some cases it matches the Raleigh News & Observer, which today, using my library card, I can see has a gigantic photo of one of the most serious problems caused by Helene. That's a photo I'll be keeping. Without the damage, it would be a nice looking stretch of I-40.

What I meant was a bad event can be historic and have a major front page.

So even Democrats would have a reason to be disappointed in the lack of a historic front page.
Are you kidding? I was in radio for 20+ years and you know what I learned, most people don't really think about radio...it's not the center of the world.

Add to that most newspapers don't like radio since they compete for ad dollars.

According to the Article, they'll still Broadcast on stations in the Eastern part of NC that covers The Fayetteville, Washington/Greenville/New Bern and OBX markets as well as many other markets in the Southeast. They've had a pretty good run and John Boy has hinted at retiring for a number of years now. Maybe that time is not too far off. I recall the first time I ever heard an air-check of John Boy was when he worked at WRJZ Knoxville TN in the late '70s when WRJZ was Top-40. I've enjoyed listening to John Boy and Billy over the years but I also realize that over the years, Charlotte, has grown to become a little more progressive than other areas of NC. It may be that I-Heart may want a morning show that will appeal a little more to such a progressive audience or at least a younger audience.

That's what I suggested earlier in this thread. JB&B are each in their late 60s, and it's possible the demos for the station were being weighted down by 55+ listeners. The classic rock format has an average age of 51, with a lot of people in their 40s. So it's possible they'll want a more music intensive show that brings down the demos.

I got my Sunday paper today, and the big topic was not I-40 so now I have to copy those I-40 photos from the News and Observer. There was a separate front page article but not about John Boy and Billy. They were on page 18A.

I haven't listened to see what is replacing John Boy and Billy. The Fox website still lists them as the morning show.

End or an era, as John Boy and Billy end their decades long run in Charlotte. I believe about 40 years when you count their initial time on 107.9. I guess iHeart is preparing ahead for their expected retirement in a few years, and wants to adjust the demos for a younger audience. I remember their heyday in the 80's and 90's along with Robert D. Raiford news and comment. Great entertaining radio back then, but the redneck style humor may not have as much widespread appeal in Charlotte today. However, west of Charlotte you can pick up Rock 101.1-WROQ from Greenville-Spartanburg, which still carry John Boy and Billy. Does 101.1 make it to Gastonia?

Charlotte's legacy morning shows may be nearing an end due to retirements and talent changes. John Boy and Billy, Bob and Sheri a few more years, and Ace and TJ split. Will there be a new long term morning show emerging? Time will tell. These days I mainly listen to Bo and Beth on WBT.

Since September, the Sunday Charlotte Observer is no longer delivered to retail outlets in Greenville-Spartanburg, Asheville, Hendersonville, Rutherfordton and areas west of Charlotte. It was previously sold at Publix, Harris Teeter, QT and some other similar style convenience stores. Not sure if it is still sold in Shelby. They had a piggy back courier arrangement with The New York Times and Wall Street Journal, whose regional editions sold in the central Carolinas were also printed and distributed from Charlotte. Not sure why they won't continue shipping the Observer along with these other publications, as it would not require a separate courier or route.

Ace & TJ GONE
Paul from Paul & Sara Lee on 96.9 GONE
Now John Boy & Billy GONE

Charlotte radio has taken MAJOR body blows the past couple months... UNREAL. I grew up listening to all of these.

I’m sure Sara Lee will be gone with Paul Schadt next year. They’ll probably just move Bobby Bones from evenings to mornings and call it a day.

It’s sad that almost all of the local iHeart stations will have almost no live and local jocks. You have 2 of the PDs voicetracking 2 hours, Woody & Wilcox syndicating out of 106.5 and Miguel and Holly which is the worst rated, but somehow the only local morning show remaining. The rest of the time it’s national voicetracks and corporate playlists. I don’t know what the long term goal is.
