FM Frequency of the Week: 104.1

Wilmington Delaware

Strong signal from Translator W281CM Swedesboro NJ relaying WOCQ 1510AM Salem NJ with Spanish Hits (La Maxima). It signed on several years ago eliminating any DX'ing on this frequency. Stations I've logged before it signed on -

WAEB - Allentown PA
WPRS -Waldorf MD
WCXL - Kill Devil Hills NC

Wichita, Kansas, USA: In normal conditions, nothing.
However, tropo had allowed me to pick up various stations, including K281DI Wellington, KS [KLEY], KMGL Oklahoma City, OK, and KGGF-FM Fredonia, KS.

East Tennessee (Knoxville/Sevierville): W281BQ, translator for WSEV 930 as "Watson 104.1), with a Jack-type format. Before this translator, WCLE, Calhoun TN and WALR, Palmetto (Atlanta) GA made it in at times. During one of the rare tropo events we get around here, I got WNKE (formerly WPAY and currently WPYK) Portsmouth OH. (This was during Northern Kentucky University's trimulcast).

Retro/other: West Central Ohio: WLBC-FM was always dominant.

Tyler, TX:

The classic country stylings of "104-1 and 103-7 The Ranch" KKUS Tyler. Coming from just up the road in Hideaway, it is the strongest FM signal at my location, hands down.

North Iowa: A faint KOEZ/Ames, though KZJK/St. Louis Park has come in a few times.

Central Kansas: A faint K281CD/Newton, which relays Bott’s KJRG. Before the translator signed on, it was a blank frequency, though I believe KGGF-FM/Fredonia and maybe KIBZ/Crete made appearances here and there. Outside of that, I haven’t had much luck receiving anything.

Kenosha, WI- No locals, but depending on which way "the wind is blowing" I can receive: WVGR Grand Rapids, MI, Michigan Public Radio, grandfathered 96,000 watts, about 97 miles across Lake Michigan (usually in there); WZEE Madison, WI, about 85 miles. Have occasionally heard WLBC Muncie, IN and WRLU Algoma, WI.

Nutley, NJ I get WAEB if I have the TEF radio tuned to 104.06. If I'm 7 miles West of my location, WAEB's HD can impact WAXQ 104.3 in spots. Quite interesting what topography can do.
Otherwise, I've had WMRQ from Waterbury, CT during tropo and W281CK Lakewood, NJ

Local Class C KAFE Bellingham WA is all that I will ever get on 104.1.

Until 2010, this station was on 104.3. It swapped frequencies with CHHR Vancouver on that date, to help facilitate a new station at 104.5 in the Seattle market. Part of a complicated 4 station frequncy swap. I cannot find the picture, but the two morning shows met at the US/Canada border (Peace Arch Park, for you locals) and exchanged a giant 3 for a giant 1. It was cute, and a great way to generate a little press to help listeners remeber the move.

KAFE just celebrated their 30th anniversary as an AC station. It's so old that it was originally called the "Soft Rock Kafe" back when both the term "Soft Rock" and the term "Hard Rock Cafe" were used often. LOL. Now it just goes by "Kafe 104.1." Still pronounced like Cafe. Also now somewhat directional to protect 104.3 Vancouver, but only a bit. 60kW, 701M HAAT. Surrounded by miles of salt water. The signal gets out!
KAFE-KISM Transmitter.JPG

Nice view for the CE when he services KAFE/KISM/Praise 106.5 and KVOS-TV. COL Bellingham is on the left edge of this image. Quite alert volcano Mt. Baker in the distance. This is looking east. I live behind the second set of rolling hills on the right edge of this shot.

BTW, you can visit this location, or at least nearby, by paved road pretty much year around. It is on Orcas Island, in the San Juan Islands, and the tower is on state land as part of Moran State Park. The trick is getting out to San Juan Island- during the summer the ferries are by reservation only and there is quite the wait list. This time of year it is easy to get there, but good luck seeing anything in gthe gloom of winter!

Hartland, VT:

Nothing except during enhanced reception conditions, when WWBX Boston can be heard,

Meriden, CT:

WMRQ Waterbury, alternative rock.

Clifton, New Jersey

I can receive a faint signal WAEB-FM Allentown, PA in a couple of spots on the TEF6686 radio, but it comes in better during tropo. Other tropo catches include WMRQ-FM Waterbury, CT and W281CK Lakewood Township, NJ.
