"Potential New Operator" For 98.7

Possibly John Catsimatidis. If so, does he go for talk or music?

What we know is the current LMA ends in February.

When he says "new operator," that might mean another LMA. When he says "popping in," that might mean format.

Seems to me that given the size of the Hispanic population in the area, the market could support another Spanish language station. New York only has 3 on FM. WSKQ and WXNY have virtually identical programming, which emphasizes salsa and reggaeton, and is aimed at the Dominican community. WPAT FM has a very specialized format, also tailored for the Dominican community, which plays lots of bachata.
There should be demand for a station that appeals to the large number of Hispanics that are from countries other than the Dominican Republic. Perhaps a true Spanish A/C format, similar to Luna, (on WBLS HD2).

SBS had been rumored to want an outlet for Regional Mexican, so they could cover all New York Hispanics in a combo buy. The genre is hot right now even if Dominicans and other people from the Caribbean rim do not listen to it, but there is a huge Mexican and Central American population who do enjoy that music.

They are if the radio station owner wants advertisers (which excuses K-Love and NPR, who run on donor money).
No. No. No. They are based on what a group owner feels is the best fit for their cluster to reach a certain demographic.

Formats only exist to serve demographics they want to be able to serve advertisers. Stations don't care what music a station plays. Audacy wanted 94.7 to fill a niche reaching 25-54 listeners that Country wasn't doing that would also not hurt WNEW or WCBS-FM. In a cluster dynamic, they also want to ensure their top stations are protected from competitors or use a lesser one to protect their stronger ones.

The Block does that by attempting to chip away at WBLS, Hot and Power while not harming any of Audacy's other brands.

It was a colossal struggle for SBS to come up with $7.5M to purchase KROI in Houston. The closing was delayed 14 months after FCC approval with four Extension of Consummation filings (and they came close to needing a fifth) while SBS scraped together the money. How would they afford WEPN-FM?

Could MediaCo afford 98.7? They were able to buy Estrella Media last year. 98.7 could be a nice addition to WBLS and WQHT. They could use 98.7 to broadcast their Spanish A/C Luna format, currently on WBLS HD2.

Remember, the market for Spanish language radio is almost entirely among first generation Hispanic immigrants.

The last significant migration of Puerto Ricans to New York was in the 50's and 60's. The Niuyoricans in the 18-49 and 25-54 sales target demos are not Spanish speakers.

So we are talking about Dominicans and a growing bunch of Mexicans. Less than half of all Hispanics in the market are Spanish dominant.

And that is a majority group within Spanish dominant Hispanics.

If you look at the Nielsen sample, it is mostly Dominican. Mexicans under-recruit for People Meters for, perhaps, not wanting to be "tracked". There is no other significant target group with a massive common taste.
