Fire coverage thread

KABC 7 went back to network programming and is carrying ads for the first time since Tuesday. The main stations blew out normal programming and advertising over the past 48 hours. Lots of revenue affected. They do benefit having retransmission consent payments to subsidize them.
They were also the only commercial station that aired Jimmy Carter's funeral service this morning -- although they cut away to news toward the end.

Wikipdeia says: The FM broadcasters on Mt Wilson are KPCC-FM 89.3, KPFK-FM 90.7, KUSC-FM 91.5, KRRL-FM 92.3, KCBS-FM 93.1, KLLI-FM 93.9, KTWV 94.7, KLOS-FM 95.5, KNX-FM 97.1, KKLA-FM 99.5, KKLQ-FM 100.3, KRTH-FM 101.1, KSCA-FM 101.9, KIIS-FM 102.7, KOST-FM 103.5, KBIG-FM 104.3, KKGO-FM 105.1, KPWR-FM 105.9, and KLVE-FM 107.5.

Very little ENG is done with microwave these days, though. It's mostly done with bonded cellular data.
I was thinking more of the STLs, though even that may be fiber in some cases. KTLA was breaking up occasionally and it wasn't because of my satellite feed for a change.

All the Mt. Wilson/Harvard FMs hanging in there?
The Altadena fire moved up the foothills, mostly of Mt Harvard and not directly to Wilson. But the two peaks are hard to even tell "where one ends and the other starts".

While that is along way away, the stations have done a lot to keep dry underbrush and dead trees under control.

Here is a link for the Altadena area that shows Mt Harvard.

The reporter talking about Mt. Wilson right now on KCBS just mentioned their off-air signal is used by satellite companies, but not by the local cable companies. Might be the same with KTLA.

I should have said, as a one who was part of the previous Mt Wilson fire, that it is just amazing how fast a fire can climb a mountain. The hot air currents become gale force winds and they move, as my high school physics teacher said, upwards.

Until you have seen one of thse huge fires move, it is incomprehensible how rapidly and intensely they propel themselves.

I would think that if not actual flames burning down the building. The air intake for transmitters sites or generators may be impacted by the smoke and it may make sense to shut a transmitter site down so the cooling system does not sustain smoke damage. No mater if it's a closed system or takes in outside air. Smoke being drawn through a Generator or air conditioner can be bad.

I tuned in this evening and this is what I heard in the 8 pm hour.

1070 KNX straight ahead coverage.
640 KFI, Tim Conway Jr. talking about covering the fires.
790 KABC, some babbling
870 KRLA, Mark Levine screaming about people being shamed for living in single dwellings and not living in multi units and taking mass transit.
89.3 KPCC, straight simulcast of KCBS-TV/KCAL
89.9 KCRW, David Bowie/Space Oddity.
If this were some sort of contest, I'd say KNX and KFI would win it easily. Is Mark Levine syndicated?

I sincerely hope that nothing like this happens up here in NorCal anytime soon. The only times in recent history we had anything remotely comparable were the October 2017 Wine Country Fires, and the 2018 Camp Fire in Paradise, and for as severe and expensive as the damage and loss of live were during those fires, both of them combined are a tiny drop compared to what's going on in LA right now.

Reporters from KNSD San Diego are helping with the coverage on KNBC. KGO-TV reporters are also in LA helping out with coverage on KABC.

Good news , Mt Wilson flames are under control now.
KFSN in Fresno as well, also helping out KABC, seeing some of their reporters on sister flagship WABC's (NYC) newscasts along with the ABC News correspondent.

Hopefully this horrible bunch of fires will encourage the study, learning and implementation of better forest management practices. In particular, improved forest thinning, better undergrowth policing and trimming or removal of weak old growth.
