Denver KVCU on Denver Open Media's translator

Noticed today: Denver Open Media's translator K225BS (92.9) has begun rebroadcasting Boulder's KVCU (1190), a rare example of a student-run college AM station. The translator had been rebroadcasting KUVO-HD3, programmed by Denver Open Media. KUVO-HD3 continues with the Denver Open Media programming. It seems odd that Denver Open Media wouldn't use its translator to rebroadcast the HD3 subchannel that it's programming. This is clearly not an accident based on the RDS readout pictured below. KVCU DJs are giving the translator ID fairly often.

The Denver Open Media website doesn't reflect the change of primary station for K225BS. (Edited this sentence to be more precise.)

The translator, located in the River North (RiNo) area north of downtown, is in stereo but the program material is currently in mono.

KVCU is a good college station that I DXed once, hope this ends up getting them a few more listeners.

Also in Denver translator changes, 98.1 K251CV is now rebroadcasting Catholic Radio Network's 1040 KCRN Limon.

Actually, that's 1120 KCRN Limon. ;)

I was doing a dial scan yesterday afternoon for a receiver review; K251CV went off the air in the middle of that, so I'm pretty sure the Catholic Radio Network rebroadcast started today. It's in stereo, though it doesn't really need to be.

I always wondered if "Limon" is pronounced locally as "Lie-mun" or "Lee-moan".

LYE-mun. (edit to correct the pronouncer)

Very unlikely that any limones grow in Limon, unless someone's got a plant inside. It was below zero (°F) in much of eastern Colorado this morning!

Another edit: According to the Historical Atlas of Colorado:

The KP (Kansas Pacific railroad between Denver and Kansas City completed in 1870) helped plant the towns of Strasburg and Limon, which were both named for section foremen. (Map #28)

So Limon was named for a person. I never would have guessed!

I found a self-published book -- a booklet, really -- from 1954, Place Names in Colorado, by J. Frank Dawson, which confirms the story:

{Named} after a railroad foreman of the Rock Island R.R. It was first called Limon's Camp, then Limon's Junction (for the Rock Island and Union Pacific R.R. Junction). The present name was adopted in 1909.

No lemons here!
